Find the culprit: Pale Moon browser, machine, Mint version [SOLVED]

This one is a troubleshooting puzzler.

PROBLEM: On my desktop, running Linux Mint 18.3, I open my browser Pale Moon 28.1.0 64-bit and Facebook complains: "For a better experience on Facebook, update your browser" (suggesting Chrome or Firefox). Other than the annoying one-line banner, there is no loss of functionality whatsoever.

On my laptop, running under LM 19, when I use PM 28.0, the problem on Facebook does not occur.

QUESTION: How would go about figuring our whether the difference lies in the machine, the Mint version or the browser version?
(Don't bother being snarky about Pale Moon; that's not the point here.)

Ok, geniuses, have at it!

Which user agent strings are either of these browsers using? In other words, how do the browsers identify themselves to the websites you visit?

I used your hint and found the solution. This is what I did:

I went to about:config (yes, there be dragons!) and looked up useragent. I noticed that the list of preference names included Preference Name: general.useragent.override.facebook.com
Value: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.9 (Pale Moon). I also noticed a more reasonable one in the general.useragent.override.google.com preference.

In sum for anyone wishing to fix it, here are 5 easy steps to fix this:
  • Find

    Code: Select all

    general.useragent.override.facebook.com
  • Click on the preference name and the Enter String Value box will appear
  • Enter

    Code: Select all

    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.9) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.1 Firefox/52.9 PaleMoon/28.1.0
  • Go try Facebook and the error message will be gone.
I'm assuming this will work with other sites that say they don't like Pale Moon.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Moem!!!
THAT WAS IT!!!! You win the prize (an all expenses-paid trip to your computer). I'll share this with the Pale Moon forum, where everyone seems stumped.
