permanent resolution 1920x1080
For some weeks I have tried to improve the quality of my HP monitor which calls for 1920x1080 resolution. Following on line advice I ONCE managed to set the desired 1920x1080 which was lost at the next boot.
following on I can not re-find the correct modeline by using cvt , obviously I am doing something wrong but struggle with poor eyesight & rubbish typing so try to avoid using terminal in case I "brick" yhe system.
Please could someone give a line by line blow by blow account of how to find & keep a working 1920x1080 resolution

Thanks to both of your suggestions, sadly nothing worked
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
What did you do, what was the output. Post the results here, we can probably help. For starters, what version of mint are you using?

typing cvt into terminal shows usage: cvt [ -v| --verbose] [-r| --reduced] x y [refresh]
-v| --verbose : Warn about CVT standard adherance.
-r| --reduced : Create a mode with reduced blanking
x : Desired horizontal resolution (multiple of 8. required).
y : Desired vertical resolution (required)
refresh : Desired refresh rate (default: 60.0Hz)
Calculates VESA CVT (Coordinated Video Timing) modelines for use withx.

Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
With the monitor you want to work at 1920x1080 connected (I assume it's what you are using but at a lower res), type
Then in a terminal type:
you will get something like this as output (but the numbers will be different):
This tells you the modeline you need to use. Then in the terminal enter (replacing everything after newmode with the modeline you got from
then (replacing
Now go into the mint menu > preferences > display. 1920x1080 should now be there, select it, does it work?
If it works, to make it permanent, edit the file
xrandr
in a terminal. What we are looking for is which port is the monitor connected to. For all monitors connected it will display the available resolutions. For example, my monitor is on HDMI-2, which I can see from part of the output:Code: Select all
VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-2 connected primary 2560x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis
Code: Select all
cvt 1920 1080
Code: Select all

cvt
above):
Code: Select all
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
HDMI-2
with whatever your monitor is connected to, and "1920x1080_60.00"
with the output of cvt
if different):
Code: Select all
xrandr --addmode HDMI-2 "1920x1080_60.00"
If it works, to make it permanent, edit the file
.profile
to add the the two lines above for newmode and addmode at the end. This file lives in your home folder.Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
The monitor resolution should be detected and the monitor identified automatically.
Have a look in System Settings (it is in the main menu), Hardware, Display where there are a number of resolutions available to be chosen. Click Apply after making your selection.
My HP monitor (HP 25er) automatically sets to 1920 x 1080.

Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
kyphi is right, the system should automatically detect the resolutions available on the monitor. My post is what to do if the resolution you want is not present in menu > preferences > display, i.e. mint is not detecting the resolution you want and you know that the monitor supports it.

Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
unfortunately the monitor is shown as "unknown"
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
Thanks Andy will try again following your instructions
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
typing cvt into terminal does not give any modeline results ,only displays the result as shown above. Tried sudo , same result.
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
You are typing in what I gave in full, not just cvt?
Code: Select all

OK Thanks Will try again tomorrow
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
OK I can now see the modeline but when I write in newmode I get ,failed to parse -hsync as a number
Re: permanent resolution 1920x1080
Post the results of what you are getting in your reply - copy and paste the outputs from the terminal in your reply, you can enclose them in the code markers (the </> button above your reply window). What I want to see is your equivalent of:
Also post the output from xrandr, for example:
This will tell me what resolutions and what port your monitor is connected to.
If may be that cvt is returning the wrong modeline (as my example above) or you have the port wrong or we need to get the modeline directly from the monitor using

OK I have installed get edid & in a nutshell it says that the video card & monitor are not compatible. the monitor is an HP2311c & the VGA controller is Intel 82945G/GZ integrated controller (rev 02)
I would post the results from the terminal but I do not know how to save the results to home or desktop
