mouse scrolling in tmux

[Deus Absconditus]

I have just installed tmux and noticed that I can't mouse-scroll through shell output.

Two questions:
1. do i need to create a tmux.conf?
2. if yes, where do place it? and, finally
3. what is the line of code to get my mouse-scroll behaviour back?


I tried creating ~/.tmux.conf and placed this line in it (by itself)

set -g mouse on

and got the error output:

bash: set: -g: invalid option
