(SOLVED) Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
last night before going to bed i set gparted to shrink one partition that is on a gpt drive and create a new partition in the freed space, this morning i woke to find the one partition shrunk but the new partition not created. then to top that off i hasd to reboot to get the one partition to mount again instead of just being able to mount it right then or have it remount through a simple logoff / logon. nowe adter the reboot i attempted to create the one partition an was greeted with this.

that under ANY os on a gpt partition scheme should never happen. below is what ftp means. now with that said is there a way to correct this?
"GPT’s Advantages
GPT stands for GUID Partition Table. It’s a new standard that’s gradually replacing MBR. It’s associated with UEFI — UEFI replaces the clunky old BIOS with something more modern, and GPT replaces the clunky old MBR partitioning system with something more modern. It’s called GUID Partition Table because every partition on your drive has a “globally unique identifier,” or GUID — a random string so long that every GPT partition on earth likely has its own unique identifier.
This system doesn’t have MBR’s limits. Drives can be much, much larger and size limits will depend on the operating system and its file systems. GPT allows for a nearly unlimited amount of partitions, and the limit here will be your operating system — Windows allows up to 128 partitions on a GPT drive, and you don’t have to create an extended partition."

As shown in the figure the existing partitions are assembled and are therefore in use.
You must disassemble them to create a new partition table on the disk.

do you mean unmount them,or delete them cause the later is not going to happen, and it still doies not explain the message.
EDIT: JUST reread the message, and looks like i just need to unmount them. gpated might want to think about how they word their error messages. thanks for catching that.

Re: Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
It appears you are trying to manipulate ntfs partitions while they are Active! So there is no reason to blame gparted as that is exactly what it is telling you, seems like a perfect Error readout to me. You need to Turn Off "Fast Boot" in Windows and retry.
What is the new partition for and what will you be formatting as?
You could have done this in Windows also, especially if you wanted to make another ntfs partition.
To get a good look at all your partitions use this command. Copy Paste the output to your next post to allow others to see what you have now.

Re: Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
pcpunk actually the way the message reads is that i'd have to erase the disk, so yes gparted needs to reword their message. anyway all unmounted, new partition created, rebooted, and have all including the new one showing in nemo. the partition is a ntfs volume. i don't have fast boot nor secure boot on, nor do i have a windows partition anymore. i made the new partition ntfs cause currently it's what i'm familiar with. not today, but sometime in the near future i'll convert them to whatever is best for linux on a gpt partition scheme.

When you did the partitioning, did you do it from an installed Mint version or from a live USB/DVD?MrGrimm wrote: ⤴Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:32 am actay thway e message reads is that i'd have to erase the disk, so yes gparted needs to reword heir message. anyway all unmounted, pnew partition created, rebooted, and have all including the new one showing in nemo. the partition is a ntfs volume. i don't have fast boot nor secure boot on, nor do i have a windows partition anymore. i made the new partition ntfs cause currently it's what i'm familiar with. not today, but sometime in the near future i'll convert them to whatever is best for linux on a gpt partition scheme.
Anytime you want to partition using Gparted, you should do it from a live USB/DVD. Fewer headaches.
P.S. From the pic you have posted, there is nothing that says that you'd have to erase the disk.
Re: Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
I'm not terribly familiar with Gparted, but it looks to me like the OP tried to chose to make a new Partition Table instead of a new Partition.

Re: (SOLVED) Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
Since the problem is solved, can I also offer another solution.
MrGrimm. It would make it waaaaay easier for people to follow your thinking if you used a little punctuation and Capitalisation. e.g.
"Actually, the way the message reads is that........" and so forth?

Sorry if my text got confused.
I don't know how to read or write or speak or hear in English.
I do everything for software.
Re: (SOLVED) Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
MrGrimm, I did miss that post of yours were you posted you UnMounted the partitions due to an overlap in posts I believe. You didn't state how you did this though so I can only assume through gparted.

Re: (SOLVED) Unlimited Partitions Being Limited To Only 7
yes through gparted if you had actually read my post you'd see there was no reason to mention gparted again.
