charles@charles-Inspiron-1526 ~ $ system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):

    import newprinter
  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py", line 2
SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\x9d' in file /usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py on line 3, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html for details
Well this didn't fix the problem, that said, is there a list of "calls" to "Trackback" on to maybe a time when the file would open? Went looking for the printer file in the Home Dir and didn't find one, even looked in Config but to no avail.

So followed the path graphicaly,,,,,,"/usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py,,,,,,,And got to a file that is labled a text editor type file and and got a red box and a message that gedit could not open the file for this reason "gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character encoding from the menu and try again." I tried the other options in the drop down box. but to avail.

/home/charles/Desktop/.~lock.hplip-3.16.11.run#. Does this ( .~lock ) mean that I can't open the file?

hplip-3.16.11.run, without "~ lock." and without "#", is the hplip installation file.

The application "printers" of Mint that is invoked by the executable that is called "system-config-printer" and should be located in the folder "/usr/bin/".
It is a "shell script". It can be corrupted on your system. There is a launcher (shortcut) to the "Start menu".
Try invokes it through the terminal by typing the full path:
/usr/bin/system-config-printer

The application "HP Device Manager" is part of the hplip, when this is installed separately.
Is invoked by the file called "hp-toolbox" and should be in the folder "usr/bin/".
This is a link "py" that points to "/usr/share/hplip/toolbox.py". There should be a launcher (shortcut) in the "Start menu" If hplip was installed separately.

I believe that should be happening hplip conflict in the system.

I am confused,,,, tried terminal......

Code: Select all

charles@charles-Inspiron-1526 ~ $ /user/bin/system-config-printer
bash: /user/bin/system-config-printer: No such file or directory
charles@charles-Inspiron-1526 ~ $ /user/bin/system-config-printer-applet
bash: /user/bin/system-config-printer-applet: No such file or directory
I followed the path graphically and yes "system-config-printer' and "system-config-printer-applet" is where it should be. So I open bath files and got a system message asking if I wanted to "Run in Terminal or Dislay or Cancel or Run" I chose Display. For "system-config-printer' I got,,,,,,,

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
prefix=/usr
exec ${prefix}/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py "$@"
For "system-config-printer-applet" I got,,,,,,

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
prefix=/usr
exec ${prefix}/share/system-config-printer/applet.py "$@"

There appears to be a broken link the Terminal and the file system and this is a new problem.

When I first installed LM 17 I was using a Dell Inspiron 1526 now I am running a Dell Inspiron 1525. it appears Linux Mint is not architecture, dependent, But apparently HP is, as the HP Tool Kit can't find the Printer. Even though the printer works fine. Maybe the solution is how to tell the OS it on a different computer.

I feel like an idiot,,,,,

Code: Select all

charles@charles-Inspiron-1526 ~ $ /usr/bin/system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py", line 83, in <module>
    import newprinter
  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py", line 2
SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\x9d' in file /usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py on line 3, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html for details
