[SOLVED] Trouble Instaling on Old Advent Laptop

Post by DigiMonkey88 »

Hi Guys, Im a little stuck. I have an old Samsung netbook, and managed to install Linux mint 19 on their no probs, working ok.

So I had an old Advent 7109B laptop. so thought id install it on there. But having trouble doing so.

I read on here another chap having trouble installing it. I have tried an older version of Linux Mint like he had as there is not much memory, but still getting the same message showing, I have even tried Lunbutu as i heard it was a much liter program, but still getting the same message, tried all the different USB ports. and still this same message saying unable to boot...

Message say...

SYSLINUX 6.03 EDD 2014-10-06 Copyright (C) 1994-2014 H. Peter Anvin et al

Failed to load ldlinux. c32
Boot faild: please change disks and press a key to continue.

Any help here guys greatly appreciated, Getting quite annoyed with it now, tried a few versions like I say and still a little stuck.
Thanks in advance :)

Need some specs on that laptop - processor - RAM - etc if you have less then 4GBs of RAM you will need to use a 32Bit version or a single core processor

Also what did you use to create a Live Thumb drive with? Sometime Rufus will give you this error from a Windows machine - might want to try win32 disk image

If you do not have, follow the link to the specifications of your laptop.
http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7109b.htm

Originally comes with 1GB memory DD2-533 but can use up to 2GB DDR2-667 (a little faster).
With only 1GB of that memory, which is a bit slow for today's standards, it sits on the "penalt mark " to install a new Mint.
I suggest installing an XFCE 32 bits or optionally a mate 32 bits.
This processor does not support 64-bit operating systems.

Burn the ISO to a DVD, avoid the difficulties with creating bootable USB stick.

Good luck.

I wouldn't waste any time on that. Your laptop has CD/DVD RW drive.

another Alternative for those older machines:
https://antixlinux.com/
as it's designed for older machines & is also xfce based as well.
