When are you getting the screen tearing? This sounds like a graphics driver issue. I used to get this in Cinnamon and XFCE, but a few tweaks and the latest Nvidia drivers fixed the issue. Can you post the output of inxi -Gxxx?

AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core w/16 GB RAM

Haha, in the future just Copy Paste those outputs into a Code Box, which is at the top of the Reply bot and looks like this: </> Or just into the Body of your next post.

I don't know that I've ever seen "modesetting" as a Intel Driver like that?

Not at you, just laughing. We were all new at one time or another and I'm by no means an expert. Nice to see you tried the fix, sorry it didn't work.

I would try a couple of other distros/DEs (via Live USBs) to see if they have the same issues. I still think it's video-driver-related; good luck finding an updated one for Linux (Intel's site is not the easiest in the world to find things).

I wonder if installing the Intel driver would be better?

Open the Driver Manager and see if there is a Driver there.

I've been reading up on this, but this is one of the reasons I don't use linux all that much anymore. It's like pulling teeth finding answers to stuff like this. I think there should be a Driver there for you but for some reason there is not? There are drivers available from Intel but it's hard to tell if they will work with 18.04 or not. It seems the preferred drive is the "modesetting" one except for older pc's.

This page is interesting but I have no idea how to use it. I've been on the Intel Forums but they don't care about home users, it's all devs I guess.

I think apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel followed by a reboot will automatically use the intel driver if you want to give that a shot. However, switching from intel to modesetting is usually the way to stop tearing.

Yeah, I saw that MrEen, just don't think it is current. And yes, I agree from what I read the modesetting is the way to go.
