Fans not working

Post by BlackREz »

For some reason my fans don't work at all.I tried using pwmconfig but when it reaches the fan it says that the RPM is 0 and it is skipping it.
My laptop's model is GL553VE.

hi, Welcome to the mint forums.

No one can help you with just a model number (they don't have time to look it up either, the real good "helpers" here are quite few in number)

Anyway you should read, the how to get help thread, especially #5 viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444

The post back the results of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Then someone might be able to get you going.

Haven't seen fan issues for years, your may have just died ? From experience I keep a spare.

Also I don't know if this is important but my system is dualboot. I have the bootloader and the C: drive from Windows 10 on the SSD and the HDD is split between linux mint and windows.That's how I know that it isn't a dead fan because I have no problem with it on Windows.In windows I use the RoG gaming center to control fan speed manually or set it to automatic.Also now the rpm for the cpu fan is -1 :(

This is the output from pwmconfig:

Code: Select all

# pwmconfig revision 6243 (2014-03-20)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.

Found the following devices:
   hwmon0 is acpitz
   hwmon1 is coretemp
   hwmon2 is pch_skylake
   hwmon3 is asus
   hwmon4 is iwlwifi

Found the following PWM controls:
   hwmon3/pwm1           current value: 255

Giving the fans some time to reach full speed...
Found the following fan sensors:
   hwmon3/fan1_input     current speed: 0 ... skipping!

There are no working fan sensors, all readings are 0.
Make sure you have a 3-wire fan connected.
You may also need to increase the fan divisors.
See doc/fan-divisors for more information.

Re: Fans not working

Post by SpookyWatcher »

Linux and Asus Laptop fans have been the bane of my existence. I have the GL702VS. Both of my fans work but I am unable to control them. They do work on a warmer schedule than I would prefer...but at least they are working. I would love to change the temp schedule of the fans..or to just add a 30% boost like I can in windows. But that has not been possible with many many hours of work.

I have no control over fans in the bios. I also have no control over them in Linux. I have tried everything. At least my situation is better than yours as they at least work on a default bios schedule.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I'll keep an eye on this thread, just in case something gets solved.

That being said, kernel 4.13 fixed keyboard backlighting and some other things. So maybe a new kernel will help. But I have not tried a newer one.

I think I've tried everything on that post rick. Unfortunately it still doesn't work.

I am 100% sure the fan works since it works on Windows.

Try this edit the file; /etc/default/grub
change the line;
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to read;
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=LINUX"
save, and exit
run
sudo update-grub
reboot
