Hello all,

Linux Newbie here. I'm running Linux Mint 19 on an i5 platform, 64 bit. I just purchased an Epson ET-3750. The printer work great right out of the box. However, the scanner not so much! I downloaded the Epson drivers for Mint 18 as they don't have any for Mint 19. (imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-18-1.3.38.x64.deb) However, when I try to install, this is what I get:

Simple scan can't find a scanner, Xscan can't find a scanner, nor can Vuescan.

Not sure where to go from here. The scanner does work on Win 10.

I've searched all over the Internet and haven't found a solution.

Help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

maybe you can try use driver for ubuntu 18.04

I am using LM 18 with epson L-210
installing epson driver not automatically detect the scanner
after googling, my workaround is:

install sane ( if not already installed ) :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install sane sane-utils libsane-extras
Edit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
Add epkowa if it is not in the list or remove # before epkowa if it is exist
Add # before epson2 to avoid conflict with epkowa
Reboot

I have an epson et-4750 and my scanner works ok.
you need to download the all-in-one package and select either 32bit(i386) or 64bit(amd64). Install imagescan-ubuntu-18.04-1.3.38.x86.
1. Go to the Core folder and install imagescan-3.48.0-1.3.38.x86.deb FIRST
then open the PLUGIN folder and install the following:
2. imagescan-pugin-networkscan-1.1.1-1epson4ubuntu18.04-i386.deb

Then edit the imagescan.conf file in (root) and under [devices] put in the following:
[devices]
net.udi = %esci:networkscan://(your printer ip address eg, (192.168.0.12:1865) this port number MUST be used
net.vendor = Epson
net.model = ET-3750
net.name = (name of the scanner..can be any name you wish)
then save.

Then edit your host file as follows:
Printer ip address for eg. (192.168.0.12:1865)
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 (name of your computer)
save the file.
Reboot.

I have also found that only Image Scan works. It is the only program besides Vuescan that picks up the epson ET printer scanners.
Good luck

Thank you Kato! Your instructions worked! In fact, Simple Scan also works for me as well as image scan. I did notice that neither program will use the sheet feeder on my Epson. Does yours work? Did you install Epson's OCR plugin? or the other plugin in the folder?

Thanks again!

To clarify: Is the Printer/Scanner connected via USB directly to the computer or via network...?

Thanks a lot

Glad i could help.. The manual that you can also download specifies that only those 2 installations need to be installed. I think i read somewhere that if yoy install OCR it breaks the scanner system, and then you have to reinstall all over again, but don't quote me...
BTW the same problem appears whether you are connected via wifi or usb
Epson updated their software a few weeks back so that's why it now works..Would pay to keep checking their website for updated software. I didn't install ocr as it doesn't work, I don't know why they have it there if it don't work. I just went into printer preferences and properties and set it up. I think you can go into scanner settings and set OCR in there i'm not sure.

For the sake of completeness, I just wanted to add, that waiting paid off in this case:

I've got an Epson ET-3750, connected via USB. Somehow I never managed to get the scanner to work so far, gave up in autumn... Now checked again and everything works "out of the box" with the new Epson driver/software...:
  1. Download Epson's latest Linux scanner driver from: http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php
(I chose Linux Mint 19/64bit, according to my system - driver labeled: imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-19-3.55.0.x64.deb)
  2. extract downloaded file to folder
  3. run ./install.sh (as suggested)
>>> Took about three seconds to install, and now - finally - everything is working perfectly: Epson's Imagescan, XSane, Simple Scan, gscan2PDF...

Wow!! Epson seems to care about Linux and actually work on improving their software.
(Finally I can get rid of a virtual Windows-Installation, run for the only sake of being able to scan... )

Best regards

Hi Jawkneebee+88,

Congrats, you found the right file (assuming you are using LM 19 on a 64bit system)!
  • download it (save it on your computer)
  • go to the folder where you saved the file (maybe it is your "Downloads"-folder?)
  • right-click the .tar.gz-file, choose "extract here" from the popup-menu (alternatively use the menu of the folder-window: edit/exctract here)
  • now you'll find a new folder "imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-19-3.61.0.x64.deb", open it (go inside)
  • in this folder, right-click somewhere in the free space and choose "open in terminal" (if you don't have the option, look for a symbol/button showing a "$_" (somehting like "open terminal in active folder") in this window's menu bar, probably somewhere on the top on the right side...)
  • the terminal (a darkish command line window) opened, showing something similar to

    Code: Select all

    xxx@xxx:~/Downloads/imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-19-3.61.0.x64.deb$
  • there just type (exactly):

    Code: Select all

    ./install.sh
    and hit enter
  • you will be prompted to type your password, type it, hit enter to confirm
  • if everything works, installation will take only a few seconds, some lines will show up ("trigger for...") and everything should be fine
Now connect your printer and turn it on, go to LinuxMint's printer setup, and if it doesn't show up automatically, use the big "+"-button to add the new printer... (And there it will show up if connected via USB; for installing it as network printer just follow the menu, it will guide you step by step...)

(I'm not sitting in front of an English Linux Mint system, so maybe the commands are called a little bit differently - but I think you can make it work...)

If you are new to Linux: Don't be afraid, installing something like this will be the worst case scenario for 95% of users, you won't have to deal with things like this often...

Hope that helped one step further, best regards
al

Thank you so much that was great step by step for me!

when I went looking for this pkg I thought it said it had the scanner stuff too...

I can't get "simple scan" to work with my Epson ET-3750

We use the scanner every day with our kids being home schooled.

Hi Jawkneebee+88,

Great that we got the printer working (if I understood you correctly), the scanner should definitely also work!!

I usually use other programmes here, but Simple Scan also works here (just tested it) - so there must be a way for your too, I guess...

I'm no specialist at all; but what I can recommend is to update Sane (the underlying scanner functionality) to the latest version by adding a repository to your software sources: https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+arch ... u/sane-git

Have you tried other programmes like XSane or GScan2PDF? I remember having more success with certain programmes than with others a couple of years ago...

Or do you run a very old Kernel? I am on Kernel 5.0 now, I remember that 4.15 also worked well for my setup...

If these suggestions don't help you, maybe someone with more understanding of the matter can chime in...

All the best
al

(PS: Congrats on homeschooling your kids! We are fortunate to have a school that matches our ideas quite well, but if it were not so, we would also walk our own path...)

Hello Jawkneebee+88,

your Epson device is not listed on the sane-project website under supported scanners. So I think, you have to use Epson's imagescan for scanning as alLa posted above. Because file associations have changed in LM 19.x, you probably have to do the following steps to get it working properly:

Code: Select all

sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane
(in terminal)

Now you have to generate a udev-rule this way (also in terminal with the editor nano):

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules
Copy the following text in the empty file (two lines, paste it with Ctrl+Shift+V or via the mouse right-click menu):

Code: Select all

# chmod device EPSON group
ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0777"
Then save with Ctrl+O and close with Ctrl+X. I don't know, whether it works then right away. If not, please reboot.

Hi HAWR,

I did not have to do that, nor does my system have those files you asked to create... Don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining about your answer - and probably I don't understand the issue - but there must be something else hindering the scanner... I've got a LM 19.3 Cinnamon 64bit that has been updated from 19.0>19.1>19.2 - maybe there is some other fundamental difference to Jawkneebee's system...?

Jawkneebee,

Sorry that I couldn't help you better... As I wrote in this thread a couple of months ago: Back then I also was stuck with printing only (after trying anything I could find); but with an updated Epson-driver a while later, it worked without any additional magic and perfectly ever since. So maybe keep an eye on future driver versions!?

Best regards
al

Helli alLa,

it's all okay. My suggestion is based on the release notes of linuxmint for scanner issues with LM versions 19.x. Maybe Epson has adapted its driver and software to that. But you are right, we don't know the OS version Jawkneebee uses.

Maybe a moderator can open Jawkneebee issue to a new thread, because the original one is solved.

I had a similar problem. Mint 19.3, Epson ET-3700, downloaded latest drivers from Epson, but simple scan and image scan did not recognise the scanner over the network. Had to edit /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf thus:
sudo nano /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf

content of file after editing (ignoring comment lines at the top of the file):

[devices]
myscanner.udi = esci:networkscan://192.168.1.10:1865
myscanner.vendor = Epson
myscanner.model = ET-3700

where 192.168.1.10 was the IP address my printer has (fixed), so you should change this to whatever IP address your printer/scanner on your network.
And a reboot after which both simple scan and image scan work
