Is there any other info I should add that will be helpful?

Hi YDDDA, and welcome to the forum.
Are you certain you didn't boot into an installed OS? I'm pretty sure the Live disks don't have a login, at least until the screensaver kicks in. And when that happens, it should be as you posted for user/pass.
Could it be a keyboard/layout issue?

Re: Live USB login failure
Thanks for the response.
I'm sure I'm not trying to login into an installed OS as this is a new PC.
I'll try changing the keyboard, that's easy enough; however the keyboard is perfect in all other uses.
BTW, I've flashed to 3 USBs, all of which were new and two of which worked on other PCs

Are you typing the quotes when you should not? For a Mint Live Session...

Re: Live USB login failure
Thanks for response.
I am typing it correctly, as you've laid out.
I've successfully installed mint on an old laptop and used it for a month.
This problem seems to be isolated to this other computer.
