Bluetooth on Thinkpad

Post by henrym » Thu Dec 27, 2018 11:07 pm

I have Mint 19.1 Cinnamon on a Lenovo T510 Thinkpad. It is supposed to have Bluetooth, but Mint does not detect it. How do I fix that?

You'll have to begin by posting more system info, copy/paste this to the teriminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
And is there a BIOS/UEFI switch to anable Bluetooth?

Just checked a couple of places, and you may need to activate Bluetooth from within the BIOS, then install a Linux Bluetooth driver. It may be worth checking into.

A BIOS / UEFI switch would not be on the keyboard as it's not a physical switch but a setting in the BIOS or UEFI; the low-level system that starts up before the operating system does.

I already checked the BIOS at startup. There is no mention of bluetooth, but according the the specs this laptop should have bluetooth.

I saw a suggestion that Bluetooth is accessible in the BIOS settings under Security, then IO Port Access under that. Then the F10 key to save and exit the BIOS. That example may not be exactly the way your model is set up, but the setting for Bluetooth is probably buried and non-intuitive.

It is not there, and everything which is in that section is enabled.

Is there a terminal command which could check for a Bluetooth device?

Are you sure you have bluetooth? It was an option on the T430.

O.K., let's assume for a moment that Lenovo had a Bluetooth device on every T510 (which seems to be true, by Lenovo's site), then the only thing that could be missing would be a Bluetooth driver/application. So try this, for Mint. Go into your Software Manager, or even better Synaptic, and search for
bluetooth
. If some package or application shows up, and it's not installed, install it. If a package or application shows up as already installed, then see what program/executable/script has been installed, search for it and try to run it.

Sometimes an application will show up in a menu but under some unexpected name, or under some unexpected item or submenu such as "Network".

Neither my Mint laptop nor my Kubuntu desktop unit has a native Bluetooth adapter, nor have I installed a dongle for Bluetooth on either one, so I can't direct you to some menu item and say "try this".

The only way Lenovo could have included Bluetooth with some of the listed wifi cards would be to have another internal module as none of the Intel models listed included Bluetooth

I have a Thinkpad T430 and the bluetooth works. It cannot see my Thinkpad X61 but can pair with my phone, my phone can see the X61 but cannot pair with it without a code, 0000 and 1234 do not work. Strange.

On the T430 you do not get an indicator on the dash though but on the X61 you get an indicator of bluetooth activity. So yours may well be working but is not being seen or something.

According to Lenovo, the T510 DOES have Bluetooth.

Recommend installation of a Bluetooth driver/application. Then proceed to troubleshoot.

Hi everyone,

On my Thinkpad X220T I never saw any bluetooth device showing up, then got curious after reading this thread. I confirm that I found it in the BIOS menu indicated by jglen490. Thanks !

PS : I just checked on my Thinkpad T410, it's in the same BIOS menu. So there's a fairly good chance that it's the case for your T510 too.

EDIT : Ok, this is not the solution, I misread henrym's answer. But thanks jglen490 anyway

I have a 510, and I don't think it has Bluetooth.

I also restarted and went into the BIOS, I did not see any option for Bluetooth.

I have a pre-installed bluetooth software, and I already installed another with out luck. Maybe I do not have the adapter, but I will check a bit further.

Here is the output of lsusb:

I'd guess that if there is no Bluetooth entry in the BIOS menu Security > I/O Port Access, then you may not physically have the chip. If it never showed under any OS, then to make sure the last thing you have to do is to open and check for yourself :
