Im usin the xfce version of Mint 6 on a hp pavilion ze4500 laptop. Its specs are:

448 mb ram
1.86 ghz amd ahlon xp2500+
30 gb storage

Everytime i run firefox or epiphany and i go on youtube, hulu or some other video site that uses flash the comp becomes sluggish and the cpu shoots up to 98% in the system monitor. Is there a problem with my laptop or is it not able to handle this edition of Mint? What edition should us or should i just use a different distro of linux.

PS
How do i find out my specs because i have a feeling i provided the wrong one above. Isnt there a terminal command or something.

Running flash video on a machine with that little RAM is going to have issues, not matter what Distro of Linux you're using. If possible your best bet is to stick some more RAM in there. The Video card could also be an issue.

That said you could opt for a lighter desktop environment like openbox / fluxbox though I don't think it'll help too much. The flash plugin for Linux leaks like a sieve and tends to chew up quite a bit of RAM. This also happens on most other OSes to be honest though maybe not quite as bad.

As for seeing the specs of your machine you have a few options:

Kernel information:

Code: Select all

uname
Hardware information:

Code: Select all

lshw
PCI information:

Code: Select all

lspci
USB information:

Code: Select all

lsusb
CPU information:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cpuinfo
Memory information:

Code: Select all

free

Something to try:
Type this in the Terminal to remove the non-free flashplugin

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
Then this to install the Adobe Flash plugin

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

EDIT: good info nandemonai :)

Welli havent installed a graphics driver. Can that be a cause? the reason i haven't is because i dont know what the card model is. i do know its an ati card but i dont know which one it is. I tried lookin on google for the specs but no luck

i ie your solution richy and it seems like it skimed off a bit of the cpu usage(like 10%).

thanks for the info nandemonai

EDIT: found th card model its ATI Radeon IGP-340M. not sure how accurate this info is tho. When i use the lshw command it says its IGP-320m in brackets Ex. [IGP-320m]

also i read that the xfce version of mint isnt geared towards it being a smaller edition like xubunu is. If so what in the hel is the point of this version.

Hi Gumbotron,
To get your specific video hardware info type the following into the terminal, and scroll to find the VGA section.

Code: Select all

lspci -v
you can then copy & paste that section here.

You can/should install Hardinfo to have infos on your computer, it is in the repos. Plus with it you can run some benchmarks... It's a very useful little app.

linuxviolin, good idea.
Too bad the title isn't the same after install  , if a person doesn't know to look for "System Profiler & Benchmark", they would never find it!

It likely doesn't help but on a machine of those specs I doubt you'd see any major improvement. Worth a shot if you can get the restricted driver working for that chipset.

it only uses half of my ram tho. ive seen people with worse specs than mine and they dont seem to have this problem
