question about setting up dual boot w/Win10

Post by ginahoy » Tue Jan 08, 2019 3:30 am

I'm looking at a used laptop for my wife (Dell E6540 with i7 4th gen). It has Win10 installed. How much trouble would it be to set up dual boot with Linux Mint?

Do Have a Read of this Tutorial, as well:
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=163126
it's written for win-8x, but does apply to win-10 as well.

Thank you for pointing me to these helpful tutorials. I was familiar enough with installing LM18 not to need a tutorial on that part, but the dual-boot and partitioning details would definitely cause trouble.

I generally find that dual boot causes more trouble than it's worth.
Instead, I have 2 boot partitions, then drop into bios when I want the alternative boot.
Hardware:
Motherboard = Intel DH77EB
CPU = G2020 with stock cooler
Memory = 4*4GB ripjaws
Boot drive = Crucial 240GB msata

I am not an expert but I recently installed a (Linux Mint 19.1) dual boot on Windows 10 and found out, after some tearing of hair, that in addition to disabling fast boot, I also had to get rid of Bitlocker encryption on the Windows partition before Linux would see that partition. In retrospect, I think it might have been helpful to do that before shrinking the Windows partition, as it took me a few steps to do it once it had already been shrunk. I'm only recording this in case someone else comes here with the same problem.

That's exactly what I plan to do. The recommended tutorials explain what I need to know to do that. Honesly, I don't care to dive into Win10 (I'm still running XP on my business machine), but I thought it would be prudent to keep the installation in case something comes up where I need to use it. My wife will strictly be using Linux Mint. I originally searched for laptops with Linux pre-installed but then realized I was shooting myself in the foot by limiting my search in that way.

Thank you for that tip. I don't recall anyone mentioning that issue in the above-linked threads (although the focus was Win8.1). If you wouldn't mind a couple of questions... Was Bitlocker enabled by default on your machine? Did you literally 'get rid' of Bitlocker? Shouldn't disabling be sufficient? Thanks.

Sorry only just saw your post, hope you sorted things out in the meantime. Yes, the machine I took delivery of did apparently have Bootlocker enabled by default as the Windows partition was encrypted when I looked for it; and yes, I think all I did was disable it.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm still looking for a laptop that meets my requirements, although it my target is now a Dell E5550 with 4th gen i5 CPU. The E6540 is too heavy, and an i7 CPU would be overkill for our portable needs.
