Mint XFCE 18.3 "configured multiple times" error

Hey all, i've done a little google searching, as well as on the forums. I haven't found a fix, or wasn't implementing it correctly.

I do a sudo apt-get update and eventually,

i get a lot of lists of multiple entries. and errors



When i go to the directory for the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ i don't see any duplicates in the files.

yet i can do a inxi -r and i get

I see the deb-scr entries in there are those a problem?

It's gotten to the point i can't even get the software centers to open. Still very much a newb when i comes to packages and repositories.

check the list of repositories. vivid is not the release you can use. You needs xenial.

Does you use regulary debian packages? Regular packages are UBUNTU. ubuntu is an upstream of debian. So there is no need to include debian directly.

Mint is an upstream of ubuntu what is an upstrem of debian.

No offense meant, yet, your sources list files look a bit convoluted, not to use the term "mess".
I'll start with the simple things.
This is the list of your sources list files:

The first file in the list /etc/apt/sources.list has not been used by default on Linux Mint for the past 5 years or so.
This file looks a lot as if it may have been copied from a genuine Ubuntu system at some point in time, because Ubuntu puts its own repositories into the file /etc/apt/sources.list still today.
Yet there are not only the genuine Ubuntu repos in that file, but also some more PPAs.

The first problem, which arises, is that all the xenial repositories are present in this file /etc/apt/sources.list and in the official Linux Mint software source list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list.
What makes it harder to recognize these duplicates, spread across 2 files, is that both file reference different server addresses.

/etc/apt/sources.list references http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/.
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list references deb http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu.

So my first suggestion in order to clean up is

• backing up the file unmodified /etc/apt/sources.list to some place in your home directory
• edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list with root permissions and delete all the 8 entries given below:

  You can edit the file with root permissions on Mint 18.x using the commandline gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.
• As you are in the file /etc/apt/sources.list, delete the removed repository as well. It has been dead for months and will not return back to life. Therefore delete the line, reading deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu xenial-removed apps
• Once you have done so, you should run another sudo apt-get update and post the list of remaining warnings and errors. This list should help determine how and what to clean up next.

Sorry. Looks like removing the duplicated references for the Ubuntu software repos did not have the intended result, because the Ubuntu repos from the sources list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list do not work properly.
I admit I have never come across a list of sources list files, which caused so many errors and warnings, when doing a sudo apt-get update.

I will start all over from scratch, analyzing each error message to be read in your first post and retrieve the exact repo lines which each error message is about.

In case you should reset the whole sources list files to Linux Mint Factory Defaults, this will not uninstall any application, previously installed from a repository, which may no longer be present in the reset sources list files.
Yet, Update Manager will no longer find updates for such applications.

In any case, before applying major changes to your current sources list files, it may be wise to back them up beforehand. Even though restoring them may not make much sense, at least it would be possible to look up what their content was and which PPAs had been present.

The inxi -r report in your first post has been used to create your undmodified sources list files here. Next they have been backed up in a .tar archive and the .tar archive has been gzipped.
The result is the .tar.gz file Brian_sourcesfilesorg.tar.gz, attached to this post.

Hello, Brian.

Have gone through all the error messages, which sudo apt-get update produces on your system.
Most of the error message have their root cause in missing repository signing keys, keyword: NO_PUBKEY.
Relating the repos/PPAs for which there is no PUBKEY on yours system, returns almost every single line in the sources list file /etc/apt/sources.list.
This seems to confirm that this file has found its way from a totally different Ubuntu system onto your current Linux Mint system.
As a consequence it tries to contact a lot of PPAs, which have never been properly added to your Mint system. Hence they needed signing keys are missing from your system.
Quite a few of the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list exhibit more problems, like being for outdated Ubuntu versions like vivid or precise or being for debian instead of Ubuntu/Mint.

Suggested solution for almost all the NO_PUBKEY errors:
Remove the file /etc/apt/sources.list completely. sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list
Should you find out later on that you need any of the PPAs / repos mentioned in that file, you should add them explicitly using the command sudo add-apt-repository REPONAME, because doing so will make sure that the PPA/Repo signing key will be imported to your system as well.


Suggested solution of fixing the WineHQ NO_PUB key problem:
File: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
Issue: WineHQ have had to change signing key recently. As a consequence you need to import the recent key, please.

Much to my own amazement, the 2 steps, explained above, should resolve your sudo apt-get update issues.

Please, try. Next run the commands inxi -Sr and sudo apt-get update again and post the screen output, which both commands display.
