sending email (Solved)

Post by GELvdH »

I installed LinuxMint 19.1 in a dual boot environment with Windows 10 Pro build 1803. the dual boot works fine but when I tried to send email from Thunderbird build 65.0b2 I can't. I have worked with the tech support people and we changed the ports (465, 587) etc. nothing works. I have 4 computers, of which 3 are dual boot and one is stand alone, and it was doing the same on all of the dual boot setups, the stand alone cpu works fine. Any suggestions?

Hi Gunter,

you will need to give us some hardware results on those machines:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
type that on each LinuxMint machine & post the result of each one - back here,,
& also note which is a dual_boot & which is not that.
Image
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] - when your problem is solved!
and DO LOOK at those Unanswered Topics - - you may be able to answer some!.

Gunter hi,

POP, or SMTP ?
On the machine that works, which port is it using ?
Just checked mine and POP is using port 110, SMTP is using 465.

Remember that one tiny typo will keep things from working, double check everything. Maybe better idea is copy the .thunderbird folder from the working machine, and replace the others with it, that would at least eliminate that as a possibility.

Here are some more specifics. Both of my email addresses are set to IMAC, all of the machines are using the same ports at both addresses. When I deleted linuxmint from two of my machines and reverted back to windows they started sending email properly. My machine with linuxmint only sends email OK. It seems that there is a problem when mint installs in dual boot mode, it has happened on three of my machines when I try to install on Windows. Any ideas?

I will try the inxi -Fxz entry on the dual boot machine. Thanks.

First off i use thunderbird as my preferred retriever and i don't have a problem..but i did encounter a problem like that a while back.
REMEDY:
1. delete account and re-create on one computer at a time and check to see if problem is fixed if not try the next..
2. if your isp supports POP and IMAP, then try to create with pop account with ports 110 and 25 then check that if that fails try next...
3. In security settings in account ensure you have selected for IMAP incoming server ssl/tls and password normal with port 993 and the outgoing server is ssl/tls password normal and port 465.
Are you letting thunderbird auto detect your isp's mail server settings? Or are you doing it manually?
What is the exact message you are getting when you are trying to send/receive
Can you receive emails without any errors?
one other thing too, ALL computers that are using thunderbird MUST have the exact information setup. account name, password port etc....
One more thing to try.. Can you connect to your web mail and retrieve/send there?
one more thing, which can happen and often does, is if you have you have your email open and connected on one machine and try to connect from another machine then you will get an error, that's because your isp's server has detected there has been another connection to it with the same account name, they don't like that and they mostly treat it as an hacking event, not altogether bad, as all you have to do is ensure you have logged out of the computer.
Hope this helps

Let me clarify my situation a little.
I have 4 comnputers, all of which are set up to the same mail configuration (IMAP, SMTP outgoing server, SSL/TLS, normal password, port 993 incoming and 587 outgoing, tried 465 didn't work either.
My older laptop which I use to experiment with linusmint, this is working properly with the before mentioned setup.
Mt number one desktop which is running Windows 10 Pro, this is running properly.
My travel laptop running Windows 10 Pro this is also running properly.
My second desktop which is setup as dual boot, Windows 10/linuxmint, this is the only one to have an issue with sending emails.
I had setup all of my systems with dual boot initially but had to remove linuxmint because of the email sending problem on my business (#1 desktop and newer laptop) systems.
I have tried everyone of your suggestions without positive results. It seems to me that there is some conflict being generated by the linuxmint dual boot instalation files. Of course with the problem with Windows 10 over the last several months I can't be sure and that is why I would like to be able to have linuxmint as an alternate environment.
Thanks for your help.

with your dual boot system have you checked your firewall settings in windoz and mint? there could be a conflict on one or the other maybe blocking access between each other. I presume you have checked nordvpn's firewall settings also.
Just a thought, when you dual boot and say for instance you load windoz, does thunderbird work then? and vice versa?. Maybe if you set the email ports for mint different than windoz the problem MAY go away.
Other than that, i run windoz in vb with thunderbird, and thunderbird on mint 19.1 and i haven't had your problem arise at all, which makes me think it's a firewall setting in both.
Just read again and noted you are using a beta version of thunderbird, maybe, just maybe if you installed and earlier linux version and tried that it might work.
Other than that, i'm stumped.
I'm going to dump windoz at the end of the month on my main computer, so i'll try a dual boot setup before i do, and see if i can produce your problem. The only thing different is that i'm not using nordvpm, so i may not be able reproduce the problem at all.
will let you know, i might even do it 2night.
good luck

Not a problem mate..i ended up installing mint as a dual boot and thunderbird works on both.
never had thunderbird on my windoz10 home so when i installed it it wouldn't start at all..So i re installed windoz 10 Home again, then install thunderbird with the latest version and it still wouldn't start. So i uninstalled that version, reinstalled the previous version and it did the same. So i ended up going back to ver 52.2.0 before thunderbird worked!!!! Absolutely weird, coz this computer was my old one before i built a newer one and thunderbird always worked..can't understand why the last 2 versions won't work even after a fresh install of windoz..
Anyway glad you got it working now.

Hmmmm...haven't heard about that, but i wouldn't doubt it. But i know that Microsoft are moving away from supporting some earlier brands of motherboards. Mine is a Gigabyte Z77-D3H. The only thing is that the missus is running win 10 home on her puta and i installed latest thunderbird and it worked. So i have no idea why all of a sudden the newer versions of thunderbird won't run on mine... No wonder ppl are moving away from windoz and looking for other alternative O/S like Linux. Only thing keeping me using windoz are my rpg and adventure games. If linux had them all then it would cya Microsoft, and hellooooooo Linux.

MS has been trying for years to go to a pay as you use software system that is why I am looking into linux. It seems the mint version is very good and many of the visual command structure is similar to windows. Of course there is a learning curve since it doesn't have as much of a visual interface as windows but I worked wit DOS and LDOS which were all command driven. My next thing is trying to set up a network between my 3 systems, this is where windows has done a very good job of simplifying things, oh well back into the ask questions mode. :D

Hehehe.. actually you'll find that linux is a lot easier to network than Windows/linux or linux/windoz.. everytime i start my linux machines i have to fiddle with network to enable them to see windoz, but np with linux seeing linux. my network is simple i have a home network with 4 desktop (2 windoz) (2 mint) 2 laptops with widoz and mint and t samsung tablets they all work once i fiddle with settings for mint to see windoz, so i just have the standard security for them, would be different if it was business.
