random freeze of OS

Post by silvatech »

About every 3+ hours and always when the system is idle. I will come back to it completely frozen. Screens still displaying the last images. Control alt f1 dont even work. Its completely locked up I have to do a hard reset. Bit stuck where to even begin checking this. I am wondering if maybe it has to do with the power supply i changed a month ago? Otherwise everything been stable from any software changes.

Mint 19.1 XFCE with standard kernel. Just not quite sure what to look at as I am use to having something to go off of from a crash.

EDIT should add this just incase

It sounds to me it could be a power setting fault. I have set all the power settings on my desktop to the following:

Power Options:
Turn off the screen when inactive for >>>>>>>>>>> Never
Suspend when inactive for >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Never

Extra Options:
When the power button is pressed >>>>>>>>>>>>> Shutdown Immediately

If you have a laptop then there are more power settings available to set...eg what to do when lid is closed.. I set everyone of those to Do nothing except for the power button...
hope this helps you.

sudo apt install steam
What makes you so sure the OP even has steam installed?

If it freezes again don't do a hard reset. Press and hold down the "ALT + SYSRQ" and type "R E I S U B"

That will do a proper reboot. See https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index. ... 1896.html

Thanks, I will give that a try if it freezes up again. I think I found the problem, but you never know.

Well, I thought I solved the problem, buit the computer froze again on me today. I tried the process you gave above and waited 20 minutes it never would restart. To make sure I did the process right. I did the process with the system running and it worked. So it seems to really lock it up. I happened to be using it this time and one thing I did notice is it starts to slowly not respond to some mouse clicks and that before it finally completely locks up. any ideas of what to check? I am baffled. =(

Check the /vat/log/syslog* files - you can use tail to check the end of the file.

If you have .gz extensions use zcat to view them - as in zcat /var/log/syslog.2.gz|tail

Also try grepping them for segfault or fault.

Try if it helps when you disable all visual effects in Xfce:
