Xeoma. I've played with it and was reasonably easy to use.
https://felenasoft.com/xeoma/en/
I wouldn't bother with zoneminder which is the other main candidate if you search the web. It was a pig to install and when I finally got it working I didn't like the end result (clunky UI).

When I went down this route I ended up buying a synology NAS which came with CCTV surveillance software.

Hi RemonK,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

+1 for providing the make and model information of the IP camera.

+1 for Xeoma.

Two of the most popular free camera monitoring software applications are "ZoneMinder" and "Motion". There are many posts in this forum and Internet articles on installing and using these apps. "Motion" does not require installing a separate web server whereas "ZoneMinder" does (and there is nothing wrong with installing a separate web server (ie: Apache)).

Update: I just installed and setup Motion with my USB webcam in less than 5 minutes and it is working well. They have made improvements since I last tried it.

The only thing I would add is that if you are going for a cheap chinese camera (which most of them are and mine is), as long as it supports ONVIF you can probably get it to work.

Re: Software to monitor IP Camera

Post by RemonK »

Hi! And thanx for the welcome and all the quick replies! :D

Last year i have done some experiments with different software and they all were a dissaster! (or i am at installing them  )
I believe i did try Zoneminder and Xeoma for sure looking at the screenshots. But then again, last year was also my first time with linux and diving directly into installing this kind of software was a bit too much i guess..
At the moment i am a littlebit more experienced with Linux (my third try) and if all the things i need will run on Linux, i will free myself from mickeysoft!
No sadly enough not 100%, because i need ms to run in a virtualbox for my business software , but at least i will not be depending on it!
I'm now non stop on Linux for 2 weeks! (never came this far haha) And even when i fudged up my login account last week with some stupid terminal commands i managed to access Linux, made a new account and trown away my old and it worked again. Last weekend i fudged up again, let an exploding log eat the space of my filesystem. So i deleted the logs, reboot and nope.. no login!? confused? Forgot to empty my trashcan... with the 16gb logs. Tried maaaaaaaany things to repair but they all failed.. even timeshift. It was when i booted into recovery when i saw there was 0 bytes free! And the clean option did only free up 4mb... it did not empty my trash! (maybe an idea to implement into the recovery?) I'm glad i found a topic on this forum of someone with the same problem. That solution helped me too. But already spend about 6 hours to fix my problem! :x But i still did not switch to windows!! Nope.. smashed almost al my hardware to pieces but nooo windows! I will only switch once again, that is when Linux finally runs the way i want and i have to sort some files en shit out so i can delete ms from my life!

Ok, but long story short (sorry i failed) i have indeed some chinese camera's and all 4 have Onvif. 1 Cam is a robocam21 from Marmitek that has a resolution of a Casio calculator, but i tore that thing apart and mounted it in a hole in the front door. So if the the doorbell rings i can see who's ugly face is bugging me!

What i need is at least motion detection with recording of pictures before motion and after motion and were i can on-screen determine in what part of the image the motion has to react (hope i explained it clearly? I'm dutch so skoezie mai laangwitch..)

I have a Zyxel NSA325V2 NAS but i could not find anything that had to do with IP Camera's.. i don't know either if there is software for this NAS to monitor camera's? Would be nice..

And now some inxi..

Btw make and model.. euh... make AliExpress, model i guess 'sucked-out-of-their-thumb-2.0' because they show you 10 exactly the same camera's with the same specs, but they all have a different model number.. and if you open them up you can't find any clue how they get to that number???

Ow and i don't want to use my browser to monitor, because that's not the problem, i have access like that. I really want some monitoring software! Where i can tile all 4 camera's in one screen!

Hi RemonK,

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing.

The "ZoneMinder" and "Motion" applications are using a browser webpage interface but their applications are on your local machine and they can show multiple cameras at the same time.

Tnx for starting up this thread.

I am also looking to do this, right away.

I bought an Arlo IP camera, but it takes a 10 second video snapshot, then it has to upload that to the Arlo server, then it takes 10 seconds for a browser to download it, and screw it all, the sucker who drove through my mailbox and busted it all up is gone already, and the 10 second video missed his license plate.

So, now I have a useless piece of crap, that needs to be replaced.....
at least my Wildlife Camera caught the license plate, but it is so fuzzy, I can't quite make it out. it takes 30 second videos.

We have a driveway alarm ( Infrared ) which is useless, it picks up the United Railways train engines 350 feet away from me, it picks up the birds that fly in front of it, the deer and coyotes walking across the yard.....

so, I am ordering up a Magnetic Driveway sensor that requires the Magnetic Field to be broken before it sends an alarm.... our driveway is 350 feet long, we are back in the trees away from the road. we like to know when the brown UPS truck, or the white FedEx trucks come in and leave packages...... thieves are rampant everywhere, and steal our orders.

Hi RemonK,

You are welcome...

Motion works well and is fairly easy to setup. As long as you know the IP camera's access URL, you should have no problem getting Motion up and running quickly. See the articles I linked and the one with the *** next to it. They improved their web interface to see all cameras at one time and or focus on one camera with various functions. You can edit each camera's control file to change controls and add various functions like recording sound from camera microphones or to sound alerts. You can have Motion start as a Linux Service or by adding the command motion to your startup apps. FYI: After it is installed, you do not need to use "sudo" to start motion.

Motion - see all cameras and or individual ones.

Hi AZgl1500,

If you have a video camera and are using it with motion detection software it can alert you to any activity in its field of view.

Your Arlo IP camera might still work well for you if you use it as a video camera with one of these software packages instead of using its built-in webserver to upload pics or videos to their server. You can have the videos stored locally or to your own cloud account or both at the same time.

Re: Software to monitor IP Camera

Hi phd21, i'm sorry but i have to correct myself!
I forgot that the camera's work excellent on their own! In windows i have a ftp server running and pictures and video where nicely stored into the camera's own directorie! So i have only a simple monitor program running which shows me the camera images with PTZ control.
And i really don't want to use my browser for that.

But that motion software i think i am going to use it for the doorbell cam, so it plays a sound even before the doorbell rings! :)

Edit:
Tried Xeoma, but is a bit to heavy on the cpu, and a very annoying program! The layout is a mess, it begins recording while i did not ask to do that, detects different type of camera while they are exactly the same, gives PTZ-less camera PTZ options, but a PTZ camera no PTZ options, if you scroll through the options menu and your mouse hits a combo box while scrolling it stops scrolling the menu, but scrolls the combobox.. so in the menu scrolling is very paranoia!!
For me it's a big nope!

Tried ZoneMinder, but i really have no clue on how to install that? It is for me not clear how and were to download a package??

So, tomorrow i will try some other software..

was wondering about that....
it syncs to a master WiFi hub that must be connected to a Cat5 LAN port.
it only records 10 seconds at a time... enough for most stuff I guess.
then it, or the hub, uploads to the Arlo server.
the specs are useless, tells you how to connect power and the LAN cable.

You can have the videos stored locally or to your own cloud account or both at the same time.
AZgl1500 wrote:it syncs to a master WiFi hub that must be connected to a Cat5 LAN port. it only records 10 seconds at a time... enough for most stuff I guess. then it, or the hub, uploads to the Arlo server. The specs are useless, tells you how to connect power and the LAN cable.

As long as the camera can show its streaming video, then using one of the other software packages can record as long as there is motion being detected and store that locally on your hard drive or your own cloud account or both at the same time. I guess If you wanted, you could probably tell the software to record continuously, but that would take up a lot of space. Usually, IP cameras have their own settings and built-in web server that can be accessed by logging into the camera using it URL. I see no reason that a camera would limited to 10 seconds unless that is set in their software or the camera's settings.

What is the exact model of your Arlo IP camera and is it wireless or wired?

Hi RemonK,
RemonK wrote:I forgot that the camera's work excellent on their own! In windows i have a ftp server running and pictures and video where nicely stored into the camera's own directorie! So i have only a simple monitor program running which shows me the camera images with PTZ control. And i really don't want to use my browser for that.
You should be able to store the videos using the various software locally on your hard drive or to your own cloud account or your own FTP server as well. I do not know if Motion will allow you to control the camera's PTZ (Pan, Tilt, and Zoom) functions, but I think ZoneMinder (ZM) can.

Motion works very well for typical security cameras to record video and or audio.

I have never tried Xeoma with IP cameras, so I do not know much about it.
RemonK wrote:Tried ZoneMinder, but i really have no clue on how to install that? It is for me not clear how and were to download a package??So, tomorrow i will try some other software...
I have used ZoneMinder and Motion before. ZoneMinder is a professional quality security camera software that has a lot of capabilities. It is little more difficult to install and setup, but well worth it. It does not take very long to install or setup ZM. I already gave you links to very good articles on installing and setting up ZM.

Hi RemonK,

You are welcome...

FYI: You might want to make sure Java 8 is installed and set as the default as well.
Install Java 8

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk wget curl
To set Java 8 as default

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config java

Ok i installed Java 8, 141mb.. with the second command it did not say make it default.. it said Automatic modus or Manual modus...
But entered 2 as option, did the command again and the astrix is now at 2, Java 8.

(i know, its dutch ;) )

Code: Select all

Er zijn 2 beschikbare keuzemogelijkheden voor het alternatief java (dat voorziet in /usr/bin/java).

  Keuze Pad Prioriteit Status
------------------------------------------------------------
* 0            /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java      1101      automatische modus
  1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java 1101 handmatige modus
  2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java 1081 handmatige modus
