can't add files to existing zip files (Thunar 1.6.11)

I have a number of zip files I created using Archive Manager. I'm unable to 'add' files to any existing zip file. I first tried to drag-and-drop a file onto the zip file. When that didn't work, I opened the folder containing the zip file as Root, but still unable to drag-and-drop. So I opened the zip file and navigated to EDIT > ADD FILES... The file selection dialog box has an ADD button, but when I select a file to add, the button remains grayed out. What am I doing wrong?

I would be grateful if someone running Thunar file manager could confirm that "Add Files" works properly with an existing archive (zip) file, or not. At least that way I'll know if something is broken on my end.

Hi ginahoy

Did you install "p7zip-full"? If not, I would recommend installing it now.

What archive format did you choose and did you add a password or encrypt them?

There are other archive applications available as well engrampa, PeaZip, Ark, xarchiver, etc...

I really like the PeaZip application.

PeaZip (Linux x86-64) Open Source WinRar WinZip alternative
http://www.peazip.org/peazip-linux.html

Update: Using the "7z" archive format, I was just able to add various files to an existing archive file using "add" or "drag-n-drop (DND)" using Archive Manager (File-Roller), PeaZip, Ark, & Engrampa.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for your reply. p7zip was installed (apparently) by the LM 18.2 installation disk, not p7zip-full, so I just installed the full version and that didn't fix the issue. BTW, I now see that the archive GUI is actually File-roller 3.16.5, not part of Thunar. Thanks for clarifying.

I always choose 'zip' format, no p/w, no encryption when creating an archive.
I just tried 7z per your suggestion and get the same result: the Add button is grayed out when I try to add a file to a .7z file I just created.

If I install another archive app such as PeaZip, will I still be able to create zip files from the context menu?

Hi ginahoy,

You may have to restart your computer or at least logout and back in after installing a new application or package like "p7zip-full".

Yes, you can use PeaZip and other archive programs from your file manager's context menus or even with the "open with" option. There are 3 Linux installation options GTK deb file, QT deb file, or portable archive file. PeaZip also has a few other excellent options like secure delete, verifying file checksums, check and repair archive files, etc...

You may have to restart the file manager after installing a new archiving application. FYI: Also, most file manager's context menus can be edited manually for all kinds of cool options including add new context menu items.

A lot of applications including PeaZip still use some 32-bit libraries even on 64-bit computers, so I recommend installing the 32-bit libraries too. I always install these anyway.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32stdc++6 libcanberra-gtk-module:i386

http://www.theubuntumaniac.com/2017/01/ ... buntu.html
In Linux Mint 19.x with KDE desktop or Dolphin File Manager or Ubuntu 18.04 KDE with newer PeaZip v6.7, I used the portable archive file and to get the file manager context menus I had to run the command below. It shows up under actions.

If the PeaZIp portable archive file is extracted and the folder is in your Home folder

Code: Select all

sudo cp ~/peazip_portable-6.6.1.LINUX.x86_64.GTK2/FreeDesktop_integration/kde4-dolphin/usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/*.desktop /usr/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/
FreeDesktop_integration directory in PeaZip directory provides sample scripts to customize integration of installable version, and for system integration (file associations, compression/archiving and extraction context menu entries, program's icons) of Portable version so it can fully replace the installable package.
Hope this helps ...

It works properly on both my Thunar (Xfce) and Nemo (Cinnamon).
When you select a file to add, do you make sure to click on the checkbox next to the file name you want added?

Oh, $h&t. I didn't even notice the checkboxes. I was simply selecting files I wanted to add. Duh.

@phd21, thanks for tips on PeaZip.

Hi ginahoy,

You are welcome from all of us that replied...

All Linux Mint systems come with an Archive application, but I always install PeaZip as well.

I have Thunar 1.6.10. It is possible to select a group of files and create a compressed file (.zip and other formats) containing the selected files.

But it is not Thunar that does this, but the file-roller program (also called a package manager), which is invoked by Thunar and works behind the scenes. This is already configured this way in Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce and can not be changed by an ordinary user.

However, it is only possible to add files to the compressed file (.zip and others) by opening it. And Thunar opens it with the file-roller but not behind the rags, but by launching the file-roller program.
With file-roller the user can add files to the zip file.

It seems to me that file-roller would be substutted by xarchiver. If it was, I do not know.
