[Solved] Renaming many files at once?

So I have a folder of TV episodes that I want to rename.

Right now the format of the names is: [Uploader_Name] TV Show 01, same thing for every episode with just a different number at the end.

I want the format to be: TV Show - 01 - Episode name

Is that possible? Or is it possible to do at least the part up until the dash after the number?

GPRename can do that.

HI fs0ciety,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

It sure is possible to do this and there are three really great applications made specifically for doing this:

These and other applications require a Java runtime to be installed. Linux Mint 19 comes with Java 11 installed which a lot of Java applications do work with yet. So I recommend installing Java 8 runtime and making it the default.

To install Java8 runtime (& some other stuff), open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste ("Shift+Insert" or "Ctrl+Shift+v"), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mediainfo mediainfo-gui openjdk-8-jre openjfx wget ffmpeg x264 x265
Make Java 8 the default using the command below

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config java

Hi fs0ciety,

I updated my last reply.

Ok, you are using Linux Mint Cinnamon v19.1 (64-bit).

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing.

Go with gprename as suggested by moem

Code: Select all

apt install gprename

It's a generalist GUI app for pattern based bulk renaming.

My 18.3 has "Bulk Rename" build in that will take you a long way.

For the complicated jobs I use "Bulk Rename Utility", a Windows program that runs good in Wine.

Hi fs0ciety,

For renaming TV shows and the like, using an application that was made for it like the ones I mentioned work great.

And, for renaming files in general, the suggestions by others also work great. I would add my two favorite renaming applications "Krename" and "Gwenrename" to the list.

Hi fs0ciety,

You are welcome from all of us that replied...

FYI: You can easily create desktop shortcut launcher to Java files (tvrenamer.jar) by right-clicking the desktop select create new launcher browse to the application folder and the Java jar file, then add "java -jar " to the front of that.

Code: Select all

java -jar /TVRenamer-0.8/tvrenamer.jar
