Approperiate distro for old PC [SOLVED]

Post by pascal111 »

There's a PC that hasn't the requirements of Windows 10 and it's using Windows 7, it seems the PC is some old, it may have 1GB RAM, should I use Linux Mint Xfce 32bit for it?

I searched for last version of Xfce and I found version 18.

Then you did not search very hard, the latest is version 19.1. It's worth a try.
If the machine is not up to it, you could try a lighter distro such as MX Linux.

Xfce is a good DE to use on an ancient computer (although a tiling window manager such as i3 would be even better), regardless of distro. Ubuntu is the base for Linux Mint (except for Linux Mint Debian Edition), so that is really more dependent on the packaging system. Luckily for you, you can strip nearly all the bloat in favor of shell-based processes. Learn to get comfortable with maintaining packages without using a GUI, and you'll be one step ahead of the game.

Once you get really good at using beginner distros, you can then move onto far better, advanced ones such as Arch Linux or Gentoo, which can allow you to strip things down even further.

Your words sound so good :) I like it, I'll do it, I'll learn how to install packages and become familiar with that specially with terminal.
