How to identify HPLIP version

Post by BeBop »

I recently purchased a new printer and the Linux Mint 18.1 xfce system doesn't find a driver for it. It is an HP Officejet 5055, and apparently needs a newer version of HPLIP to run it. How can I check the version of HPLIP? The original install would have been one version, however updates may have already moved it up to the most recent one, in which case upgrading it won't help. Is there a downside to just installing the most recent version regardless of what my current version may be? And what is the oldest version that will let this printer work?

Hplp isn't the only thing regarding printers.

I think the easiest way to check which version of something you have installed is to open synaptic package manager, and do search for said package.
Just checked mine (mint 19) and got version; 3.17.10+repack0-5

you could also run

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy hplip
I also checked mint 18, the newest version in the repos is version 3.16*
If you need newer than that you can download a .deb from
https://pkgs.org/download/hplip
Choose/click Ubuntu 18.04
Mint 19.0 mate on 2 identical Thinkpad T420's

Each version of Hplip contains a list of linux distributions/versions that it's compatible with, and it will not be installable on
a system not on that list. This list invariably lags behind what is currently released and installed on many computers.

Also, the latest version of Hplip may or may not support a recently-released printer model. There's a list of currently-supported
printers on the Hplip site: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing .

HP do not sell an Officejet 5055. ENVY 5055?

Anyway, forget about using HPLIP for printing. Put the machine on the network and follow the advice at

Apologies for the inappropriate advice. I failed to take notice of your using Mint 18. Knowing what the printer is might help get a solution though.
