Steam won't launch [SOLVED]

Using desktop icon gives no result. Running steam from terminal returns this:

To hopefully fix this problem try running these commands in Terminal:

Code: Select all

rm ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6

Code: Select all

rm ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1
After this Steam should be working properly.

Move your xorg.conf file out of the way, and retry, . Don't remove mesa it is integral to a lot of things. if you are using nvidia driver, sometimes you will see that libGL.so.1 points to ambiguous libGL provided by both mesa and nvidia. To test this, you can run this command

Code: Select all

sudo ldconfig -p | grep -i gl.so
The output might be something like:

libwayland-egl.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-egl.so.1
libftgl.so.2 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libftgl.so.2
libcogl.so.20 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcogl.so.20
libQt5OpenGL.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5OpenGL.so.5
libQtOpenGL.so.4 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQtOpenGL.so.4
libQtOpenGL.so.4 (libc6) => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libQtOpenGL.so.4
libOpenGL.so.0 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libOpenGL.so.0
libOpenGL.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libOpenGL.so
libGL.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libGL.so.1
libGL.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1
libGL.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib32/nvidia-378/libGL.so.1
libGL.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libGL.so
libGL.so (libc6) => /usr/lib32/nvidia-378/libGL.so
libEGL.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libEGL.so.1
libEGL.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib32/nvidia-378/libEGL.so.1
libEGL.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/nvidia-378/libEGL.so
libEGL.so (libc6) => /usr/lib32/nvidia-378/libEGL.so

Now just need to remove the library provided by mesa and everything worked perfectly.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1

Here is what the first command returned. I went no farther because my list was much shorter than yours and none of the returned items contained "nvidia" in their names or paths and that struck me as odd.

daktal@DakPC:~$ sudo ldconfig -p | grep -i gl.so
libwayland-egl.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-egl.so.1
libcogl.so.20 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcogl.so.20
libQtOpenGL.so.4 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQtOpenGL.so.4
libGL.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1
libGL.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1
libEGL.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libEGL.so.1

There was a kernel update and an Nvidia patch in the meantime. The steam launching fiasco has chnaged a bit. Steam now launches the updater and seems to update successfully, but still crashes. Here is the terminal log in case any changes are relevant:

Steam would fail to launch for me running nvidia-driver-430, so had to downgrade to nivida-driver-415 before Steam would launch again.

Steam is failing due to not being able to get the GL libs correctly.

That's a Desktop with single monitor that looks like it's a setup for dual gpu switching, but it's not (with the Intel/Nvidia combo). Maybe you can turn off onboard in the bios/uefi.

If you don't have any nvidia GL lib binaries, that's not good, something's wrong. Don't know what or how the nvidia driver was installed but it doesn't seem like a correct installation, at least for the kernel you are using because the support libs aren't there.

You can check dkms status to make sure you have the nvidia module against your current kernel.

I don't know what to do, but i would be going back to nouveau, purging the nvidia driver, or --uninstall if you used the nvidia website driver, and get it back to square one with nvidia and steam as well. Then you can move forward on each step making sure everything is correct.

If it matters, here's the results of dkms status:

daktal@DakPC:~$ dkms status
nvidia, 390.129, 4.15.0-54-generic, x86_64: installed
nvidia, 390.129, 4.15.0-55-generic, x86_64: installed

It's entirely possible that I screwed up one or both (steam/nvidia) installations. One day i was chasing down a minecraft error and broke my installation. I had to reinstall nvidia, but I did it a couple times without purging in between. Recently, while chasing this current problem, i purged nvidia and reinstalled. I guess I'm going to have to take the time to purge and install both. When i get around to it, i'll come back with the results and hopefully save someone a headache in the future. I really appreciate the help.

I've never pushed the envelope of what "can" be done, but it might be fine doing that, or installing other drivers over the top of existing ones. I tend to go extreme and purge, fall back to nouveau, and reboot between removal and installation too.

Something else to look at. You have the onboard gpu available and the system is setting up a driver for it(even though it's not used). The 2 gpu's are potentially available and that can look like a gpu switching setup like Optimus/Prime setup on laptops, or just using 2 gpu's for example with 2 monitors which is a doable setup. But the graphics output from inxi looks good and shows you are strictly running on the nvidia system, but I don't know how Steam works at the base level when getting initialized. It tries to get some GL libs setup for sure and some specific GL functionality. Here's a random search result and although the question/answer is related to Windows it's possible that the concept is the same here. So check that answer or you could look into just disabling the intel onboard gpu in bios -that way you're 100% single gpu nvidia card. Not sure if that's even relevant but figured I'd mention it.

Okay, this is just silly.

Over the past few weeks, I've revisited this issue because I REALLY miss my steam games. After countless hours of googling, uninstalling and reinstalling things, chasing error codes, fiddling with the temrinal, here is what finally worked:

Open Mint Driver Manager
Install Noveau Drivers
Switch back to Nvidia 4.15
reboot

Now Steam works just fine!

Thank you all so much for the time and effort you guys put into helping me with this error. You guys have just been awesome.

Ha! I never posted that link! :shock: It was some article, very detailed, about Steam picking up the intel gpu and trying to use that(even though it was not in use on the system), instead of using the Nvidia setup.

No matter though, that's great that you got it worked out! Thanks for posting it.
