Screensaver cosmos - SOLVED

Post by OB Juan » Thu Aug 15, 2019 7:57 pm

I'm setting up Mint 19 for a friend and want to include the "Cosmos" screensaver that I use in Ubuntu Mate.
Is it possible ?
I did read a thread from 2018 that talked about doing in a terminal: "sudo apt reinstall mate-screensaver"
Did that, but can't find "cosmos"

Help ?

Hey Juan, welcome to the Forum.

Presumably it's because Mint adds the xscreensaver packages. Not sure how to "fix" that, though, so won't hazard a guess. Will ask, though, why of all things this is the issue which provoked you enough to put in so much work? It's just a screensaver. If you want the friend's system to be like yours, install Ubuntu Mate. If friend really wants Mint, accept there will be divergences. Many of them. Almost all more important than this one.

mate-screensaver-common should provide the cosmos screensaver and should be preinstalled on Mint Mate along with mate-screensaver.

This is Mint Mate 19.2

I'm using 19.1 mint mate, with mate screen saver v 1.20.0-1 with mate screen saver common, and cosmos doesn't exist in my screen saver.

Mine either, also Mate 19.1. smurphos, has xscreensaver been dropped in 19.2? Setting up a test box is on my short list, but haven't had a chance yet.

ETA: Downloaded the Mate 19.2 ISO. Boot live session. No Cosmos.

Odd - Cosmos isn't part of xscreensaver - it should be built into to mate-screensaver. I've also got it available on an 18.3 Mate install.

Caveat - both my 18.3 Mate and 19.2 Mate installs are Vbox installs coexisting with Cinnamon and XFCE, but I can't see why that would make a difference.

The mate-screensaver-common 1.20.0-1 package from the bionic repos in 19 and 19.1 also appears to have the necessary files for Cosmos.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/all/ ... n/filelist

Not sure what is going on here..needs more investigation.

Yes, but the Linux Mint MATE editions don't include the desktop file for some reason (and from what I can see that includes 19.2 - you probably installed a different edition and added MATE on top of it). This isn't new, see my old post here: viewtopic.php?p=1551785#p1551785

Same as I said there, to get it back all you have to do is:

Code: Select all

apt reinstall mate-screensaver
Tune up your LM 19.x: ppa:gm10/linuxmint-tools

Indeed I did - Cinnamon initially and added mint-meta-mate and mint-meta-xfce afterwards.

Thanks for solving the mystery.

That is because during the upgrade the new version of the mate-screensaver package gets installed. Anybody clean installing 19.2 won't have it, just so there is no confusion.

So, I did the CLI commands to install mate-screensaver and still there is no "cosmos".
Do I need to first upgrade to 19.2 ?

No, shouldn't be necessary. You may have to log our and back in first though if the screensaver process is already running, not sure. Can you double check that the desktop file exists now?

Code: Select all

ls /usr/share/applications/screensavers/cosmos-slideshow.desktop
Tune up your LM 19.x: ppa:gm10/linuxmint-tools

Hi gm10.
I ran the upgrade to mint 19.2, seemingly without a hitch, but ....

Ran the cl you suggested & got this.

genghis@genghis-OptiPlex-755:~$ ls /usr/share/applications/screensavers/cosmos-slideshow.desktop
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/cosmos-slideshow.desktop
genghis@genghis-OptiPlex-755:~$

Alsowent to the folder "usr" and then "share" and then "applications" and there are 3 files called "screensaver" all are text files. Looking at the properties of each I see one is "cinnamon-settings screensaver" the second is "cinnamon-screensaver" & the third is "mate-screensaver-preferences".
Now there is no choice of screensaver available. I can set "screensaver delay " to 1 min and nothing happens.

Do I need to delete one of the three "screensaver" files ?

Oh lol, I thought we were talking about MATE. Cosmos is a MATE screensaver, and the instructions I gave you were for enabling it in MATE. I cannot help you with Cinnamon screensavers, but there's likely one that can do a slideshow, too (the cosmos pictures are in /usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos/, you can point your Cinnamon screensaver at that to "emulate" cosmos).

cinnamon-screensaver doesn't support the xml slideshow format.

If someone wants a slideshow for Cinnamon - https://github.com/smurphos/nemo_action ... -slideshow

No I know, I only said the pictures were in there, so you can build your own slideshow from the pictures.
