Slow copying to USB stick?

I recently upgraded motherboard and cpu and migrated to 19.1 from 17.1.
At first copying to a flash drive wasn't a problem, but now its very slow with any flash drive my old dual core cpu and motherboard were way faster with 17.1?
A portable hard drive copies fine?
I tried restarting pc but it doesn't make a difference, I tried different usb ports which makes no difference.
It also seems to copy batches of data, it starts and then will for example stop at say 7% and not move for few minutes then it will jump to say 11%.
Any ideas?
Copying speed says 3.5mb per second

I suppose that is a USB 2.0 stick or some cheap 3.0 model.

Just because you have new hardware now, doesn't mean that your sticks got faster too. I find the average speeds listed for any vendor/model in https://usb.userbenchmark.com/ reliable. First look there, then compare with the bench results you get in Disks utility.

How is your USB stick formatted? ext/ntfs/fat?

Its a sandisk USB 2.0 FAT32

Motherboard is USB 2.0 only

If the stick is the one from the Ultra line (8-64GB) you can't expect much more, they're slow. Maybe, flashing BIOS could improve it slightly, if update is available, but I don't think it's worth the trouble.

If you are copying through Nemo, there are some improvements in Nemo in LM 19.2. How do you perform the copy?

Yes, depending on the stick because there are some models bordering 2.0 speeds like one cheap Sony I've got although, even cheaper, Verbatim Store'n go writes at 11MB/s even through a 2.0 port.

It is not fluid probably because the stick is a bottleneck.

The progress indicator only move when file transfer is completed. With larger files, especially on USB2, it will jump by large % due to file size as % of total transfer.
