19.2:- Main menu outgrowing screensize

Post by Boca » Sun Aug 18, 2019 4:11 pm

Hi,
today, I noticed that my 19.2 Main menu was now larger than the screen so that the top items were not visible and could not be selected. I searched for a way of changing the menu size but without success.

Looking at the Update history, the only recent updates were for Firefox.
Screenshot at 2019-08-18 21-03-05.png
I have temporarily removed Firefox and the menu is now back to the correct size.

I would like to reinstall Firefox; is there a way of changing the menu size please?

Tony

I really don't know what happened with the menu and Firefox there but as to your question about controlling the menu size I'll mention that the size of every menu component is fully configurable in the menu version on my PPA (see my signature):

With the official version, not so much.

The menu has just out-grown the screen again.. except this time I cannot see the bottom of the menu ( with the search bar)

Again, uninstalling Firefox has cured the problem..

Thanks Gm10 for your suggestion.

For this particular thread, I would prefer to root-cause it if possible rather than add a ppa. I appreciate that your comment also relates to my request viewtopic.php?f=90&t=299926to re-size the icons on the favourite menu.

Is there anything particular you are doing for the menu to grow? Also a screenshot would help me understand better (do a timed one with a delay so you can open the menu).

I think that's a good idea. Because this interests me, I could take a look if you'd want to follow the steps I had posted here (except for reverting your menu at the end):
viewtopic.php?p=1668428#p1668428

Please do this while you have Firefox installed and ideally while the menu is bugged.

PS: I hadn't see your other thread but I replied to you there.

OK, have re-installed Firefox..... menu is looking OK ATM. I'll screenshot if/when it goes wrong.

I see you're using Mate. Do you or did you have Compiz enabled by any chance? That behavior sounds a lot like Compiz going wonky when you mess with a lot of the different settings. I've also seen Cairo dock do funny things too, do you have that installed?

Whatever may have caused the reported problem: Firefox cannot be blamed for it. The Firefox update cannot be blamed for it.

Hi, I recently noticed Compiz in the list of applications but haven't used it. Nor have I installed Cairo.

Code: Select all

tony@tony-Latitude-E6430:~$ apt policy compiz

My subject title is rather overly blaming ....

Although a root cause has not yet been found.
The problem did seem to start after the latest Firefox update and can be , temporarily, cured by removing Firefox so, at this time, it does suggest a link.

Having said that... I'll modify the title.

Rgds, Tony
