Sounds like a problem with the SSD to me.
I would say to test the ram with memtest but if it runs fine with Windows then I still suspect the SSD.
Have you ran the Crucial system scanner and the Crucial Storage executive tool ?
Thank you for this.

Yes, if it is a hardware thing, I now can't see how it can be anything apart from the ssd.
Having said that, I just also tried the sata data cable off the windows drive on the SSD.
(No difference)

I suppose unless could it be a compatibility thing with the ssd?

I like the idea of testing the SSD. I can't seem to find one though.
Crucial system scanner seems to be there to help you find compatible upgrades (unless I am misunderstanding that)
Crucial Storage executive tool seems only available for windows.

also do you have any other HDMI like a TV plugged it?
my HDMI TV resolution is low, many times when win10 updates i get a black screen at boot unless i unplug my TV.
So, I thought this would be the easiest test.
Thank you for mentioning the HDMI.
When I took out my hdmi it shut the pc down.
When I wiggled it in the slot it shut the pc down.
When I started up again without the hdmi two beeps still. (used hdmi)

Wasn't happy about what seemed like an unhappy connection somewhere.
Removed GPU.

ONE BEEP!!!!!!

OK, so tried it a few times. One beep.
Put GPU back in, two beeps (without HDMI plugged in)
Plugged HDMI n while running pc and it shut it down again.
(I thought it was ok to do that)
Anyway, tried the same again and it is fine.
No amount of wiggling or removing and replacing the hdmi shuts it down now.
But, still two beeps with gpu in.

Interesting why it is fine with windows isn't it?

---------------

Another thing please?
Is my bootup look right?
#1 Ubuntu (P0:SSD)
#2 UEFI OS (P0:SSD)
#3 P0 : SSD

----------------
AH HAH

Just found another thing. On shutdown, I get a list:
[ 24.405268] PKCS#7 signature not signed with a trusted key
followed by the same thing but a different number but in order.

I have had a look up online and PKCS#7 seems to come from a piece of hardware.
I saw it mentioned re Nvidia GPU.

well, have you unplugged everything then boot to live mint? i mean unplug both drives then hard power off. boot if it let you into live mint. then plug in your HHD and boot to live. then unlug your HHD and use your SSD
No, not yet, don't let me forget this bit.

You do mean shut down and switch off power in between each stage?
"unplug both drives then hard power off." Is that specifically switch off psu AFTER unplugging the dives?

You should power off completely before removing the drives.

Thank you for the confirmation.
I assumed that was what was meant.
Edit: I keep meaning to ask.
Is this a boot loop? A double boot? Or something else?
Another edit: Is there a way to know if it is booting fine when I remove the GPU?
The LED on my keyboard still goes off halfway through, to come back on near the end.
(I do know that my KB and Mint are not the best of pals. If I accidentally put backlight on, KB stops working.
Sometimes when I switch on, it switches kb backlight on and that means kb won't work (unless I am quick enough to switch it off again))
How long would one expect it to take to boot? Or that a 'piece of string' question?
I shall try again, but I think it was 30 or 40 odd seconds with gpu removed. (but it didn't beep twice)

Right, now to try this boot to live test.

Thanks again for this.

Unplugged SSD and HDD.
Boot to USB flash drive (I am hoping that is boot to live)
Fairly accurate times. But give or take a sec.

Boot to Live (30sec from Grub) 1 Beep.
Plug in HDD only boot to live (25s from grub) 1 beep.
Plug in SSD only boot to live (28s from Grub) 1 beep

Plug in only SSD. Boot to SSD (not live) (28s from beep) 2 beeps.

Remove GPU:
SSD plugged in but boot to live (24s from beep) 1 beep
Boot to SSD (21s from beep) 1 beep.

Have I missed anything?

i bought a computer ryzen3 in feb this year from a guy building computers. i thought i was getting a new computer but it was spare parts he had from his computer maintenance shop. i still have no idea what was new or used. the 2TB HDD 2.5 laptop drive in a desktop has 16 bad sectors, the SSD is at least 2 years old. nothing seems to be as it is and everyone will take advantage of you if you don't push and certify each piece yourself, who has time for that.

anyway it worked fine at his shop , i took it home plugged it in to my HDMI TV and i got black screen. took me quite a while to figure out that my old HDMI TV resolution was only 1024x768 or something of that nature and i could boot it if i unplugged the TV and hooked it to my DVI monitor.

i don't have any words of encouragement other than you need to learn your hardware "curves" that i mean is what do those beeps mean to your motherboard from the manual?

Hi, yes, thanks.
Yes, that is what I am trying to deduce. what bit is wrong.
As already suggested and tested, it still beeps twice if I unplug my monitor (actually it is a tv and have wondered if that makes a difference) and use vga, I also tried with no monitor at all, both times, two beeps.

I looked up the manual and it states about one beep and two beeps.
I always assumed the two beeps should be together. As it doesn't state the time between the two beeps, I contacted Gigabyte, the mobo maker. They say that it is not right. Linux guys are saying it is hardware, Gigabyte people say it is Linux.

With all of the various tests above, especially the last one with the drives. This one:

I am wondering if the aim of that was to see if it was the SSD. The SSD was brand new. (Not that that always means anything).
So, I think that I am down to, the SSD itself or maybe I just need to do a fresh install?
I am not entirely sure what the above test results indicate.
Although there was a slight question mark about the GPU, plus the errors that showed up (as seen above), but I have found it mentioned on here and it has been said that the Nvidia errors are normal and nothing to worry about.

Edit: I am still not entirely sure what I have. I am guessing a 'double boot'?
It was originally suggested it might be a 'boot loop'.
Also, I am assuming it can't be a setting I have messed up somewhere as nobody has mentioned those?

Right, excellent.
Getting somewhere.
Have a guy at Gigabyte who is happy to answer my questions.
Up to now the answers have been pretty vague and not really answered.

Didn't think this was going to be so hard.
I assumed I had ticked a box wrong or something.

So straight answers from gigabyte and we are at:
We don't know.
Could be anything installed on the system.
Could be the Linux installation.
We don't really support Linux.
We have never seen this before.

So, I wish the first guy had answered my questions this clearly. Would have saved me ages.

I think with a process of elimination, most other things have been removed from the equation.

The only possibles I can think of are:
The GPU (although it boots normally to windows and my hdd.)
The SSD itself.
The Linux installation.
Combo of Linux and GPU
Combo of SSD and GPU
Combo of ssd gpu and linux.

I don't know if anyone is following this, but I thought I would add an extra bit of info.

I am pretty sure I tested the integrity of my original Mint on my usb. I mean, why wouldn't you.
Well I have had it returned having lent it to a couple of people and it now states:

Errors found in 1 file.

I shall save another copy to it to remove that doubt.

I am still following this to see if you get a resolution.

I guess we'll have to see if a new , verified live Mint USB gives you a different result.

I have a quick question.
Next little hurdle.

I can't delete from my uSB.
I see it is read only, so I assume I have to reformat it, right?

I have completely forgotten what file system to do.

On my ssd, my efi partition is Fat32
On my main partition it is ext4

On my USB it says it is iso9660.

It said error.

Now I need to create a partition table.

OK, don't worry about that one.
I think it is GPT,
I think it is GPT because I think I am UEFI.
I think that because I copied this:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep "EFI v"
And it returned something, so it has to be UEFI.

OK, getting there.
Downloaded a fresh ISO (am now 19.2.....)

Got my laptop ssd, removed windows (was going to do that anyway.)
Put on mint in my pc. One beep. (Wanted to check that the download was fine)

Did fresh install to my pc ssd. One beep.
Updated Mint. One beep.
Went to fastest mirror. One beep.

It suggested I change GPU drivers to the Nvidia driver. TWO beeps.
So I took a snapshot before I installed updates. Will go back to that and check.

So what Nvidia driver was you trying ?
I'm using 390.116 as that driver has always worked fine for my Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB.
I tried the recommended one once (430.26) and had problems, so I used the old one and everything was fine.

Yup, just about to test it.
Each time before, I have switched to the recommended.
It beeps twice.
I shall leave it as it is now.
Only one beep.

Edit: Yup. Triple tested. It is the recommended driver that makes me beep twice on startup.
Edit edit: Boy that took a lot of time to find that out didn't it?
