Ha ha.
Well, that one gives me an extra beep.
I get a beep soon after pressing 'restart'. This is while shutting down.
I then get the two 'normal' beeps.
With the bonus of a humming through the speakers until the third beep. Starting soon after the first beep.

Well, since I did all that, it keeps crashing.
Well, to be more precise, the visuals crash I think.

The mouse still moves and the music still plays.
I can't click on anything though.
I have gone to 19.2. Is that less stable?
Graphics driver?

Any thoughts please?

I am wondering why you have 2 different speeds for your memory modules, your motherboard manual does say to use the same speed modules.
16Gb is lots for memory, why do you have the 4Gb slower speed module ?
That could be causing crashes. Have you tried taking the slower speed module out ?
It would be nice if you could use the Nvidia driver, not sure why you seem to have problems with that.
I am on 19.2 and have had zero problems, and like I've said before, I'm using Nvidia graphic driver.
What do you mean by you can't click on anything, is this a new issue ?

Yes, it is a new issue.
I shall try taking the slower memory out, but it hasn't caused any crashing since I put it in.
That only started since I made the changes.

The only changes were fresh install and different GPU driver.

I tried the RAM separately in both channels and I still had the two beeps.

Sort of as I say really.
The sound continues.
I can move the mouse.
But everything else is static. Just like a screenshot.
I can not interact with anything.
I have tried clicking on everything, but nothing reacts.
Edit: I have tried not playing music or doing anything.
It did the same thing with just chromium open not running anything else (well, anything started by me). (Actually, that is different. I used to use Chrome)
I have been on and off the pc most of the day and it has happened 6 times I think. So, sort of once an hour I guess.

yes but what do "2 beeps" mean ? the computer is telling you what's wrong but you keep ignoring the issue. it's saying "beep beep" or "beeep beeep" so what do they mean?

The 2 beeps have gone away since I fresh installed Linux.
They came back when I switched to the recommended GPU Nvidia driver.
I reverted back to the default one and the second beeps went away.
I think it was a double boot.
The motherboard manufacturer had never come acorss two beeps a distance apart like that (apparently)

Good question.
I don't really use windows generally. Just twice a year to update my satnav.
I guess I should give it a go.
Although, I have never had this issue before when I was using windows. (actually, I have made a lot of changes since eh?)

I am wondering if there could possibly be an issue with the gpu.
If the recommended driver works for others and doesn't double beep, I mean, I can't be the only one with this gpu eh?

Reason I have the extra RAM is because I had 8gb ram 4x2GB.
Wanted to upgrade to 16gb and wanted matching so went for 2x8gb.
Had a couple slots spare so thought why not pop them in.
They have been fine for a few months.
(Apart from the double beeps, but removing them made no difference to that)

OK, where am I at? Need to try :
Removing the RAM.
Trying it on Windows.
That is it, eh?

I get this during boot up.

Just logging each step here or I will forget.
Swapped out the lower speed RAM.
Made no difference. Same line at startup and froze three times.
Am now trying the other RAM.

Edit: Nope, froze twice already with the other RAM only.

go into your bios and set optimized defaults and save, then do a memory test at boot for a few minutes

have you booted with nomodeset?

Anyway, onboard gpu. The inxi shows dual gpu but single monitor. Typically that would get an Optimus type of gpu switching setup, although fbdev is unloaded which is what you want anyway. Turn off the onboard.

To test list:
1) Test if it is just windows.
2) Removing RAM. No difference.
3) Set optimized defaults and save. Tick.
4) Memory Test at boot for a few minutes. Forgot to do that.
5) Turn off onboard. Testing that now. I disabled intel graphics in BIOS. Screen still has that line on startup.
6) Boot with nomodeset. Don't know what that is, but will look it up.

Out of curiosity, does the OS normally disable the Intel graphics?
I have never had it freeze like this and have had graphics card with graphics onboard for 5 years that I know of.

I guess I should try the windows option :(

1) well, I ran windows did everything I could think of. Had three youtubes running, a silly game, spotify, plus a benchmark test. Ran it for about three hours.
All was fine.

Although I didn't run Chromium.
Seems odd that is freezing after a fresh install having not done it ever before doesn't it?

Other thoughts that cross my mind.
Could it possibly be the ssd itself?
I might try not using chromium and revert back to chrome. That is a difference.
Possibly it is the graphics driver that is causing the freezing problem. Perhaps this driver is just covering up the real cause of the double boot?

Thanks.
11) OK, this looks interesting.
Red is bad right?
It won't let me post the whole thing in one post, it is too big. I shall do it over the next post when I am back from work tonight.
Here is the first red highlights though quickly.

Code: Select all

[ 0.776760] MODSIGN: Couldn't get UEFI dbx list

With a quick search, first one seems to suggest I need to switch secure boot mode to standard in BIOS.

This is the second red one.

But the second one looks the most relevant right now eh?
