Starting a few days ago, definitely within the last week, my laptop running Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit will just randomly restart.
At first I thought maybe I didn't notice the battery life running low or something. But it happens even if plugged in and the laptop is high on charge. I have zero clue why it happens. The restarts happen if I am watching YouTube or reading things online or watching something on VLC, etc...
Any ideas?

Hi,
First thing when posting, prob best to give the output of
to give ppl an idea of your hardware/desktop environment.
With older laptops, sometimes dust can block vents and lead to overheating. Always worth giving the lappy a vacuum all over. Don't be shy.
Can you also check the SMART status of your hard drive.

Re: Unwated/unplanned restarts
I would also look at the content of your /(root) directory.
It looks like you do not have a separate /home partition, but 192G sounds big to me - unless you have a lot of personal data on there.
The issue, to me, is that it is 90% full & that is a great deal more than I would be comfortable with...
If it is personal data then I would consider getting some form of USB storage device to save data to.
Have you a lot of old kernels, logs or (worse) timeshift snapshots saved on that disk??
If so just a clean up of the disk may well make your issue go away.

Re: Unwated/unplanned restarts
Doing video intense things can heat up a processor more. Next time using video like youtube, also check your temp values. Do you have lm-sensors installed?
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
Re: Unwated/unplanned restarts
I will transfer some files to external hard drive. What percentage should I look to get under? Under 85%? 70%? I have no idea.RIH wrote: ⤴Thu Sep 19, 2019 9:24 pm I would also look at the content of your /(root) directory.

I have no timeshift snapshots. I don't know where to look for logs. In kernels, I seem to have many.
It shows I have 4.15.0-64 active, but I have everything from 4.15.0-24 to 4.15.0-62 along with 4.13.0-45
Should I uninstall all kernels prior to the current active one?
edit: I transfered some things and am down to 75% now, if that is good enough.

I do not have lm-sensors installed and do not know what that is. I don't know how to check temp values, but will google to see if I can figure it out!Spearmint2 wrote: ⤴Thu Sep 19, 2019 10:14 pm Doing video intense things can heat up a processor more. Re: Unwated/unplanned restarts
I would delete any kernels prior to 4.15.0-58.

Re: Unwated/unplanned restarts
As far as kernels are concerned i only keep 2. The newest 1 that is running currently & the last one that ran with zero issues - usually the 1 that was running before the latest 1.
If you ever need an even earlier 1 then it is easy enough to install that through Update Manager.
As for how much free space I would be happy with... that is a very personal issue too, sorry..
90% would make me uncomfortable.. 80% far less so & 70% worry free.
But that also depends on the size of the partition too. 10% free space on a 4TB is obviously far less of a worry than 10% on a 120GB drive..
EDIT
i have just seen you edit & I would be comfortable with 75% but would still keep an eye on it...
