Linux refuses to start

Hello,
When I started Linux Mint it seemed to work normal.
I tried to open a video file but the only thing that happened was my cursor changing in that circle loading symbol.
Then I did a restart.
During the restart, my computer went to the Linux login screen, while it is supposed to go to the desktop directly.
I gave up my password, but this didn't work.
I don't know what to do now and I need my computer.
Can someone please give me advice?

Enter your password without any caps, even if you thought you used a capital letter, see if that works. When did you install it? If recently, go run the sha256sum on the ISO file you downloaded, make sure it was a valid download.

Code: Select all

sha256sum -c *.iso

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Then I get the message 'wrong password'.
When I use the right password it seems the computer wants to startup, because the screen goes for a few seconds to black, but then it returns to the login screen.

Hmm, seems it's not finding the GUI interface. Use the CTRL Shift combo with function keys like F1, F7, F8, and see if you can find the graphical screen displayed at any of them.

You held the CTRL and SHIFT key at same time you pressed each F* keys? Something should have happened.

No, nothing happens.
Or is it during the black screen that I have to use this combination?

what black screen? You said it was the "login screen". Can you go into more detail on what is happening? Are you at a black screen with nothing on it, or one with a login prompt? You can try those combo keys on any screen you get.

I'm in the login screen and enter my pasword.
Then the screen goes black during 4 seconds
Then the login screen apears again.

Seems you using the wrong password then. Try entering without a password. Also try some of the typical installation ones;

mint
root
toor

I don't use the wrong password. It's the password I always use.
When I use something else it says 'wrong password'
But when I use the right password, that I always use, it makes the screen goes black for 4 seconds and then the login screen apears again.

it's 4am here, so off to bed. Europe is waking up now, 9am in London, and I see 15 other members online already, so maybe one of them can take you further, if they pickup on the thread.

Sounds to me like one of your partitions could be full.

Could you post the output of

Code: Select all

df -h

Do you still have your installation media?
Can you boot from that?
If so somebody here can probably help you find out what's wrong

Pascal Illustrator, When given code to execute, you need to
1. Press "Select All" then <Ctrl><C>
2. Open a terminal
3. Press <Ctrl><Shift><V>
4. Press <Enter>

After the results show in the terminal
1. Click on <Edit><Select All>
2. Click on <Edit><Copy>
3. Close the Terminal
4. Paste the results from terminal in a reply using <Ctrl><C>

I can't use the terminal or any application because I can't log in.
I don't have the install usb stick anymore. Then it seems the only solution is a complete new install with a new stick.

...as Lysander666 implied above, so, try rene's instructions here first.

I can't do this because I don't understand. I don't know what a console is in Linux or what all this code means.
I'm an end user.
Unless there's an other way I don't see what else than a new install I can do?
