What happens if you manually select a paper source? Does that change anything?

Can you select 'landscape' in the application you are trying to print from?

What I meant was, if you were in LibreOffice (for instance) and select a new document, change that to Landscape, then try to print it - what does it show?

It looks to me as though the print dialogue is simply using whatever page size and orientation is the default in your printer setup; try temporarily changing that before printing from leafpad.

A GTK dialog does uses the Landscape and Portrait options to procuce a PDF. CUPS never sees these options.

Does it matter? What exactly are you missing out on? In other words - what do you expect Landscape to do for you?

I see what he means, the choice of portrait and landscape is default set as portrait, paper size and orientation are greyed out.
LeafPad default settings, but no way to change them? :?:

I too see what he means. Why should the leafpad developers feel obliged to offer a Landscape option? What does it do for a user?

All right, LibreOffice Writer gives landscape orientation:
3To Change the Page Orientation for All Pages
If your text document consists only of pages with the same page style, you can change the page properties directly:
1. Choose Format - Page.
2. Click the Page tab.
3. Under Paper format, select “Portrait” or “Landscape”.
4. Click OK."

Indeed, it does! If my text layout is longer on the horizontal than on the vertical! If you wish to dictate what people need, or do not need, then neither internet nor Linux would exist...

LibreOffice Writer is a much more sophicticated application than Leafpad.

As already said, Leafpad produces a PDF to send to the printing system (as does LibreOffice Writer), but it doesn't offer a Landscape option because it deals with the situation you describe in a another way. Have you actually tried printing a file with long lines?
