HP all-in-one printer drivers

Post by Slowpoke47 » Fri Oct 11, 2019 2:49 pm

New Mint user, Mate 19.2 on Dell Inspiron 519 desktop. Network printer is HP LaserJet M1522nf which has successfully printed "out-of-the-box" via driver included in the Mate installation. But after looking at the HP site and the Mate user guides it looks to me that I need to install the HPLIP package from the HP site to enable the scan and fax functions. The HP site does list this printer as supported with this package, but there are multiple distros, and I'm unsure just what to do next. I'm here: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip

Would appreciate some assistance from the experienced users out there...

BTW- the further I get into our new Mate OS, the happier I am to leave Windows 7 behind! :)

You can print. You didn't say you couldn't scan. What's your problem?

The site I referenced:
see footnote 3
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... 1522nf_mfp
just confirms that network scan is and has been supported for a long time.
Your mate already should have hplip 3.17 installed. You can check in software manager.
If you want the newest version choose ubuntu in the dropdown because Mint is based on it. If you do the newest version, my advice is to look at the other link in the 1st post.
Sometimes to get the network scan to work, if you plug the printer in direct one time it will work from then on. If you can do that shut the PC off 1st then start it up with the printer on before boot.

Thank you. I've gotten this far already. Don't know which distro to use to enable full function of scan and fax. I assume the copy function may be handled by the printer irrespective of the OS.

You are correct, it's there. Simple scan reports no scanners found. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried as I suggested?
"Sometimes to get the network scan to work, if you plug the printer in direct one time it will work from then on. If you can do that shut the PC off 1st then start it up with the printer on before boot."
From your 1st post, it sounds like you are using wireless to connect.
Also did you select your printer model in the add new option on initial set up?

Thanks for responding. We have a wired network and the printer has its own IP address- took quite some finagling to get all to work together, but we can operate the printer from either of two computers. I'm afraid to plug the printer directly into the pc for fear of disturbing the current scheme.

The Mint OS knows the model and make of the printer, shows that when printing.

When the printer was installed (in Windows), there was a fair amount of setup to do on the pc by way of scanning and saving options, etc. I would expect something like that has to happen in Mint as well.

You could make a Timeshift restore snapshot of the current state, then try. That way you could get it back like it is. Timeshift would need it's settings to include everything but Home in the radio dot buttons.

Since the printer is fully functional in the old OS (Windows 7) those would be the settings I'd need to save. Not familiar with Timeshift- is this a Linux utility or MS?

Timeshift is in your Mint OS. Wonderful backup program. Better familiarize yourself with it.

Thanks, I was just looking at that in Software Manager. But it won't help preserve the current settings for the printer, which are on the Windows HDD.

It shouldn't interfere with your Windows OS to plug the printer into the Mint OS. I guess only you can make the decision. Things can always get worse with printers.
Speaking of Timeshift this is my settings for the Ext4 file system which most use and is default. Set this way, any data in Home won't be reverted if you go back in time. Everything else will be put back like it was.

Sorry. I'm not savvy enough to understand what you mean here. FWIW, this printer is on a wired LAN and the pc dual boots Mate 19.2 and Windows 7 on two separate HDD's. But I am no tech and only got this done with lots of help, mostly from the Ask Woody forum.

He means for you to open your command terminal and enter the green text one at a time and press enter. Then to post the results back here so he can have an in depth look at the status.

Two questions on this- should the printer be on or off when running these commands? And, re the text to be entered, are the characters numeral "one" or lower case "ell?"
