Followed prompts etc., to the point where the dialog asks for a password. I assume the entry wanted would be my password for the Mint OS- when I entered that, the response was, command not found.

Totally unexpected.

I am not prepared to debug your Mint installation (others might be) when it comes to basic authentication. The "password" being asked for is the one you use with the sudo command.

The only password I have in connection with Mint is the one used to log into the system, make administrative changes, etc. Is that the same password used with the sudo command?

When I type in that password and press enter, the response is, command not found. That same password works without incident when called for in any other context in the system.

We will work round this (whatever is going on).

Make a directory plugin and go to https://www.openprinting.org/download/p ... P/plugins/. Download the plugin for the version of HPLIP on your system and put it into the plugin directory. Change to this directory

Code: Select all

cd plugin
and execute

Code: Select all

sh hplip-<version>-plugin.run --tar vxf
followed by

Code: Select all

sudo python3 installPlugin.py
You can check the plugin is installed with the previous ls -l ... command and try scanning with the other commands you have been given.

Running on generator here- power out, big storm- will see how it goes...

This system has hplip v. 3.17.10+repack 0-5.

On the linked site, I see 3.17.10.plugin.run and 3.17.10.plugin.run.asc

Which one do I need? And, I do not understand the terminology re "directory" or how to do any of these operations.

Found the following in Package Manager. Tried to install the highlightrd selection, went thru a couple of prompts. Unsure if it actually happened- still no scan.

You need 3.17.10.plugin.run

Do

Code: Select all

mkdir plugin
Then

Code: Select all

cd plugin
Now execute

Code: Select all

wget https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run
Check for the presence of the plugin file with

Code: Select all

ls -l
and then follow the previous instructions.

a directory is older term for a "folder".

Do you have any comment on the current developments here?

Not really. Gotten too confusing at this point. I'd start over.

And here's why. Too many others having printer problems that seem related to systemd setup.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS
Socket activation

cups provides a org.cups.cupsd.socket unit. If org.cups.cupsd.socket is enabled (and org.cups.cupsd.service is disabled), systemd will not start CUPS immediately, it will just listen to the appropriate sockets. Then, whenever a program attempts to connect to one of these CUPS sockets, systemd will start org.cups.cupsd.service and transparently hand over control of these ports to the CUPS process.

This way, CUPS is only started once a program wants to make use of the service.

To discover or share printers using DNS-SD/mDNS, setup .local hostname resolution with Avahi and restart org.cups.cupsd.service.
Note: DNS-SD is only supported when using Avahi. CUPS does not support using systemd-resolved for DNS-SD, see CUPS issue 5452.

By default, all logs are sent to files in /var/log/cups/. By changing the values of the AccessLog, ErrorLog, and PageLog directives in /etc/cups/cups-files.conf to syslog, CUPS can be made to log to the systemd journal instead. See the fedora wiki page for information on the original proposed change.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1092392 ... untu-18-10

Notice similar problem above, and systemctl means systemd involved with it too.

Need more?

https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52628

Have some fun reading the comments on systemd
