Do you have any comment on the current developments here?
Not really. Gotten too confusing at this point. I'd start over.
I don't have the slightest clue of what I'm supposed to be doing. Most of this is 'way over my head. If I were to start over, from where?

That's the same question to myself that prompted my previous answer. I can only point you to trying the suggestions in former links of my post of how to work around a possible systemd interference in some manner. It shouldn't be this difficult. It wasn't in 17.3

I was mulling the same strategy. brian is trying his best to help me, but we keep running up against my lack of computer skills. I think there were a couple of times when he would have liked to reach out of the monitor and wring my neck! :?

Is this still all about the scanner? The printer is working otherwise? Even if printer isn't working at the time, I'd add some scanner programs.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install sane

sudo apt install xsane

sudo apt install simple-scan
The run the GUI simple scan from Menu and see if you can scan. Of course you need to be sure the printer is showing in your router with an IP address.

Yes, the printer works as expected. Cannot get into the router from Linux because the needed login etc. is on the Windows HDD. But I have no reason to think that the printer IP address is faulty; no problem printing through the network from Windows. Here's what your commands generated- looks ugly.

No clue what this means either! Still no scan function. Am I maybe supposed to do something with that downloaded hplip file to allow the system to use it?

Who are you posting to? Me? Or brian?

I added "sudo" to those commands for scanner installs.

Actually appreciate the guidance from both of you. Have to put this aside until tomorrow. Should I add "sudo to the three commands you posted? With or without spaces? And, should I do anything with that hplip download beforehand?

There is no systemd interference - except in your imagination. There isn't the slightest bit of evidence throughout this thread that systemd is involved. Slowpoke47 has two problems:
  • He needs to install the plugin.
  • He needs to set up a print queue with an hp://... URI

Over the years I have become reasonably comfortable with Windows 7 on a non-tech level. Although home-based, my business dealings, which are more and more computer dependent, often require scanning. As we move out of W7 and into Mint, it is therefore crucial to get the scanning function enabled on the new OS. The fax function, while currently working, is not all that necessary for our purposes.

Our LAN has worked well with one desktop, one laptop, and the multi-function printer/scanner/fax/copier that I'm trying to enable here. Although the desktop is about 10 years old, it has a brand new 1tb HDD containing the Mint OS. As you both can see, I am as of now basically lost on this. I have managed to download the correct (I think) hplip file using brian's link and guidance, but further progress is hampered by my lack of technical knowledge and lack of familiarity with much of the technical language. Substantial parts of the Mint OS and operations are new to me.

I really hope this installation is doable, if not I'm stuck with Windows. While my tech knowledge is somewhat limited, I can follow directions, if I understand what I'm told to do. If you can "cookbook" me through this, I will be most grateful.

A couple of posts back you gave this:
steve@steve-Inspiron-519:~$ mkdir: cannot create directory ‘plugin’: File exists
Let us see what this file called plugin is. Do

Code: Select all

ls -l plugin
and post what you get.

Good - you have managed to download the needed plugin. There are actually two identical files. That doesn't matter. We will use the first one, hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run later on. For now, we will do things step by step.

We will change the directory we are in. The prompt will change from steve@steve-Inspiron-519:~$ to indicate we are in a different directory. The command to change directory is

Code: Select all

cd plugin
The

Code: Select all

ls -l
command should show the two files above.

Fine. You are now in the plugin directory.

Carry on with doing

Code: Select all

sh hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run --tar vxf
When you now do

Code: Select all

ls -l
you will see a bunch of files which have been extracted from hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run

Can you see the file installPlugin.py amongst them?

Then why all this other stuff being done? Why not just install the scanner programs I asked you to do, then in Menu, find simple scan and try it out.

Besides. The only question asked was

You gave no answer to that. I should opt out of this now. It is getting nowhere when a simple question cannot be responded to.
