[SOLVED] If software is installed prior to using PPA, is there a problem?

Post by gittiest personITW » Sat Oct 19, 2019 1:36 pm

Hi,
If, for example, I have Firejail installed and have configured Firefox to run within the sandbox, then decide for whatever reason to add the PPA for Firejail to the Update Manager, is that the correct order to do it, or should we....
-add the PPA before installing the software and let the Update Manager do the job?

Also, does it matter if the software was originally installed using Software Manager or installed by downloading and executing a .deb package or using apt get command or using checkinstall for the PPA to recognise what needs upgrading/installing?

Cheers

The system is very simple at the base. The system holds a database of all installed packages, their versions and other meta-information (like dependencies). Meanwhile Update Manager downloads lists of all packages available from configured software sources (including PPAs) and compares the package names and versions. If an installed package is also available from a software source at a higher version number and dependencies can be satisfied, then it is shown as an available update.

That's an extreme simplification of the process but should be sufficient for the purposes of your question. :)
