[Solved] How to install a theme to Xfce

Post by blueocean » Sat Oct 19, 2019 3:22 pm

Mint 19.2 Xfce. I'd like to install this theme https://www.xfce-look.org/p/1165653/
I downloaded it, but can't see how to install it like I do in Mate.

It says to Extract the theme in ~/.local/share/themes
I don't have a themes directory there and I don't understand the system wide installation input on the directions:
Root.jpg

you'll have to create the folder it's a hidden folder. the system wide command makes a symbolic link.

System-wide is /usr/share/themes. If ~/.local/share/themes doesn't exist, go ahead and create it and extract the theme there if would like.

I'm lost.
I extracted it to look like this after creating /themes:
/root/.local/share/themes/City XFCE/xfwm4/
now what?

Completely wrong directory.

You can only use either ~/.local/share/themes or /usr/share/themes

If you logged in as root however, you might see the theme available.

EDIT: Remember ~/.local/share/themes = /home/YourUserName/.local/share/themes and you don't need elevated privileges to copy stuff to there.

Got it - easy - thanks. Was confused by the link given https://wiki.xfce.org/howto/install_new_themes
It says "Make sure the directory layout looks like this: ~/.local/share/themes/<theme_name>/xfwm4/"

I was confused a bit the first time doing the same thing. Didn't realize that proper path was already included in the downloaded file.

I'm going to try this one once Xfce 4.14 is available, hopefully Mint 19.3 (need the upgraded version of GTK): https://www.pling.com/p/1330040/

The guy that created it just started using Linux this year, and didn't like any of the themes available. Has been a regular on the Xfce forum and is learning FAST!
