Linux Mint 19 and Flash

Post by kylerickards » Sun Oct 20, 2019 5:45 pm

Hi

I am trying to watch a TV programme but I am getting messages about needing to update Adobe Flash. I am on Linux Mint 19. I have studied the forums but all the replies seem to be quite old. Does it just not work anymore? I have tried using Chrome, Chromium and Firefox but nothing works, the TV prog seems to load up but I just get a spinning circle?

Thanks
K

EDIT: Is there another browser I can use? I can't seem to find Opera anymore?

Further edit - I keep seeing 9 (Nine) replaced by dashes? So like above I typed 19 (nineteen) but it changes it to 1- for some reason?

The problem occurs on all browsers so I am guessing it's something to do with the system wide setting?

Have you installed the flash plugin? Run this in terminal:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt install adobe-flashplugin
Once installed, you'll need to activate (allow) it each time you go to a site that uses flash.
Right now, Mint is behind on flash update, best you will get is 32.0.0.255 until we get the update to 32.0.0.270

Hi

Yup I have that one but still no joy. I had to jump back to Windows last night to achieve what I was after.

Still can't work out the font thing either :(

Thanks Andy, will try that. I will separate out my font question into a separate thread.

Go to this page:
https://www.whatismyflash.com/

It will likely say flash is not installed. Click the icon left of the url address. Where it says 'Ask (default)', click 'Allow' & reload the page. It should then confirm Flash is installed.

Do that (click icon, etc.) at each website you go to that uses Flash and it should work.

What site are you on that won't play? Post the url & I'll see if it plays for me.

Ok, at first it tells me to install Flash. When I followed the instructions I gave you, it seems that it would play, but I'm not registered there. In any case, I got no spinning circle.

As am I, and the C4 website is spinning for me as well - but it usually doesn't.

I'd suspect C4 rather than Mint and Flash especially as a couple of these http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/best-flash-sites ran perfectly.

Is there any way to lower the video quality? I know on youtube when I get spinning, a lower quality usually gets it to play.
Also, try it in private or incognito mode. Sometimes adblocker or extensions can be the cause of video problems.

Tried channel4 as well (chromium), didn't work for me. So tried installing flash from my previous post https://itsfoss.com/install-adobe-flash ... ntu-13-04/. Think I may have already had it installed as it removed more stuff than it installed.

Channel4 still didn't work.

Went to https://https://support.google.com/chro ... r/6258784l and followed the instructions there:

Click on the padlock next to the URL and change block to allow.
Workspace 1_024.png
And then it worked

EDIT - and then it didn't, :? sigh, and can't get it working again. Tried in chrome and got that working. Also not registered with channel 4 so at this point I'm giving up.

EDIT2 - did a timeshift restore to get rid of whatever got previously installed, allowed flash on channel 4, registered and now like others looking at a spinny circle. Now I am giving up.

Hey all

Thanks for trying, it’s an odd one and beyond my pay grade!

But seriously I appreciate all the advice.

I too think the spinning is probably not a Flash issue. More likely something to do with that website. If Flash works for you elsewhere, it's likely good.
