how to make hard drive bootable

Post by NewMintUser » Wed Oct 23, 2019 6:53 am

I have a USB drive that I can boot from, but would like to boot from the hard drive. Linux only, no windows. When I take the USB drive out, the system boots to a GRUB prompt, I don't know where to go from there. I am sure this is an old question, but I cannot find an answer. Thanks!

So, there's a few questions here, how did grub get on the hard drive?

It world seem that you have installed linux on the computer, but grub isn't finding the operating system. Does this sound possible?

If this is the case, there's 2 options.
Somebody here will be able to guide you how to fix grub from the prompt.
Or you can just install linux again from your usb drive.
If you don't want windows, just select the "overwrite" option.

Try Boot Repair here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/files/

Burn the ISO file as a bootable CD/USB drive, restart to boot that, then try the recommended repair that Boot Repair suggests.

Remember to unplug any USB flash drives before running Boot Repair.
