Curious about software and updates

Post by Sonofman »

To get software usually, you would go to the software manager or synaptic manager, yes? And how many software would be there thousands, yes? Who keeps them up to date or how does that part work? Thanks

Synaptic will give you the full list of all the apps available. Happy counting. :)

Wow - such a small question with such a potentially big answer. But here's a short answer and a few links

For main edition Mint the most part the software comes from repositories managed and provided by Canonical (the owners of Ubuntu), with a small number of packages directly from repositories managed and provided directly by the Mint development team.

You also find flatpak packages in Software Manager (not Synaptic) that come from another curated source flathub - https://flathub.org/home

It turn much of the software in the Canonical / Ubuntu repositories ultimately comes from the upstream Debian project.

Note LMDE is Mint on a Debian base rather than Ubuntu.
