Linux mint won't install on new laptop SOLVED

Post by Okcoolguy »

Hello.
I'm new to Linux in general.
Aside from a raspberry pi running retro pie, this is my first attempt at trying Linux.

I bought a laptop specifically to run Linux on it and would like to delete windows 10 off of it.

The laptop is a Lenovo 14w with a amd a6 CPU with 4g of ram and a small 64g mmc drive.

I downloaded version 19.2 of Linux mint and made a bootable USB key with etcher.
It runs off the key and to my pleasant surprise the touchpad and wifi work well however when I try to install Linux onto the laptops hardrive, it gets stuck at the screen when you put in a password and I cannot proceed from there.
I also tried the compatibility mode however the touchpad didn't work in that case and also got stuck at the same spot (I waited for hours in each case but it simply would not work).

Is this laptop incompatible with Linux? Perhaps because of the amd chip? It works fine off the key so that doesn't seem to be the case.
Please let me know what what I can try to do

Thanks

Please see

And installation steps here in the link.
Run memtest from grub to test Memory.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

Appreciate your help but can you be more specific?

I read a bunch of the info in the link you provided however it seems that it is a general FAQ/help manual.

Anyway, I tried the following:
I ran disk check via windows and it said it no errors.
I disabled secureboot in the bios like it was recommended in the link.
I tried to verify the medium (upon first booting from USB) and it did some sort of scan and said it found an error on 1 file but it was not more specific than that.
I also ran GRUB as you suggested and it did a scan then some sort of fix but then wanted to reboot and I think this took me back to square one.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but I guess everytime it reboots, it does not hold any changes as it is booting from the USB drive?

I would love to be able to install Linux on this laptop and delete windows off it forever. I am not sure why I am having trouble installing it while it runs fine off of the USB key

Please post an inxi -Fxz report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and on how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxzd
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers.

The results will help us to help you.

ok, here is the inxiFxz report.
I should also mention that last night i tried to install again but this time I did not chose the option to connect to internet during installation and it got further into the installation (to the last of the 7 squares of progress) however in the end it said something about failing to write to sector 1 or something like that. I forgot to take a picture of it.

Boot the live media and run following for 10 minutes , then kill with ctrl c. Do you get any errors? If yes post them here. No output means your disk is good.

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=10M

yes thank you, this is the same machine I have.
so according to this poster pkosta8 who said "Mint 19.10 installer crashes as no driver for emmc drive , I got Ubuntu 19.10 installed and works no issues but uses 3x as much ram"
i guess I am not able to use mint on this laptop but i can use ubuntu?
or is it possible to install a driver for emmc drive somehow?
I really like how mint looks and works, but if it is not possible at least for now, I guess I will use ubuntu until mint comes with the emmc drivers.

Hello Okcoolguy,

I can't help you much with installing on an emmc drive. If Ubuntu 19.10 really works with that laptop, it has a higher install kernel than LM 19.2. But I've read, that LM 19.3, which shall come around christmas, starts with a 5.0 kernel. Maybe than it will have better support. But you should try it with Ubuntu 19.10 (5.3 kernel), if it really works. But maybe another user has more knowledge about this.

Amd a is around 5 years old so it shouldn't require a latest kernel.

I tried to upload a couple photos but it keeps saying file size too large even though I compressed one of them to under 500kb.

But if you look at the 7 progress squares on the bottom of the window during the install process, if I try to install with wifi on and check mark the option to install software/drivers, it freezes on the 4th square.
When I tried without the wifi option, it went all the way to the last square (including cycling through the various summary/ads for mint) but failed at the end.

I should also mention that when performing the latter; I deleted the windows partition so now I'm totally all in 🤘😎.
Also should note that when windows was still on there, sometimes the usb3.0 amd extensible driver controller wouldn't load and none of the USB ports would work until I reset the system and hope that it would load. It was weird, I'm not sure what the reason for that was. Sometimes it would load, sometimes it wouldn't. It was annoying cause when it didn't load, I could not boot from USB and the only option was to load windows via the onboard emmc drive (which is no longer an option as that partition is deleted) so now I'm just running straight from the USB and leaving power on constantly cause if I reset the machine and it doesn't load the driver again, then I will be SOL

The limit is 200. But you can also upload them to an image hoster such as Imgur, and post the link here. Ideally: the link to the image itself (not the page it's shown on), and enclosed in [rimg][/rimg] tags. That way, the images will be shown as a generous-sized thumbnail, and people can get to the full size with one click.

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

The Kernel on the Linux Mint ISO is too old to support the eMMC chip. I have the same Lenovo 14w laptop and tried numerous times to install Mint. Same error flooded the screen when booting from USB. Block xxx eMMC cannot be read. I was able to get it to boot up but manipulating the drive failed every time so of course installation failed.

I ended up installing Ubuntu Mate 19.04. This ships with Linux kernel 5.0.0-36. No issues at all installing or after. Everything works by default and battery life is 10-12 hours.

Hopefully Mint team will update the current ISO kernel or maybe on 19.3 release.

System will work from ISO since this does not require writing to the internal drive. But as the OP mentioned the install fails with sector errors. This is because the kernel does not have good drivers for the eMMC chip. It will boot and can be used live. You can view and attempt changes to the eMMC. Any attempted changes to the internal drive will fail though be they manual partition attempts or system install.
