[SOLVED] Just want to install Linux Mint 19.2 and use it

Post by Rustam2704 »

Hi everyone,

I just want to install Linux Mint 19.2, cinnamon x64 and start using it moderately. Nothing superb, just basic video watching, browsing, etc. But I can't do even that.
I have old notebook Acer Aspire 5810TZ, Intel Pentium SU4100 (1.3 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), Intel GMA 4500M up to 1695MB DVMT, 15.6", 16:9 HD LCD, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 320 GB HDD, 802.1 1b/g
I install it as all instructions recommend - (format everything, create new section ext4, everything else is automated). The issue is that system freezes either on startup (in 19.3 it was on loading LM icon) or when I try to wake it from screensaver (blinking lowercase appears). And what triggers me the most is that it happens on clean just installed system.

I was in the process of updating my notebook, installed "fresh" Win 7 x64, and it worked great, computer loaded in 1 min. Yet I got tired of Windows a bit through all these years, and I thought I should at last try Linux, I choose LMint to make everything simple. And I see it is better than Win, even by design. But so much issues with freshly installed system demoralizes me a lot.

Could you people not tell me that I'm stupid, I just need some hints on standart troubleshooting which you would do:

1) is there a way to get out of these freezes, like some Ctrl+Alt+Del Task Manager to emergency close troublecausing programms or at least to check the reason of system failure?

2) my guess is that it's some video driver (or other drivers) issue. How can I update these drivers? Drivers manager calls that everything is up to date (maybe it checks only "freeware")

So here is how problem appears:

- in live session everything works fine, I install LM;
- I reboot PC after installing, change boot order in BIOS, reboot again, system loads flawless, and works really well;
- I reboot it several times, it goes to sleep, wake it up - everything is fine;
- but then after another reboot or screensaver - BAM - freeze (or blinking underline);
- and I don't have a clue how to examine problem or where and how to check logs of error, because if I power it down on freeze - it boots endlessly.

Thank you in advance!

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Can you boot into a live session, open a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T keyboard shortcut) and run the command below, highlight the output, right click > copy and then paste into your reply between

tags. This will give a comprehensive report of your hardware which hopefully will allow someone to advise.

Code: Select all

I believe you have an Intel Pentium SU4100 not 5U4100. That is very low powered to run a modern operating system. If you are determined to use it and want to run Linux you might want to consider trying Mint Xfce to see if you have better results. If that doesn't work try something like AntiX. Curious if you had good results with the live install before you went with the install to your hard drive.

Hi, Rustam2704.

At the top of your screenshot I spot nasty complaints and error messages about the disk partition /dev/sda1. Seems to be affected by some serious kind of corruption. - Hope this does not mean that your harddisk /dev/sda has reached EOL.
Curious to learn what the live session will reveal.

Hi, Bill

It is SU indeed. I incorrectly read it from sticker, thank you. I know that PC is old, yet Win 7 worked well, and I thought that LM being more optimized would also work, considering that live session works very good.

You installed incorrectly!

Code: Select all

Partition:
 ID-1: / size: 1.89 GiB used: 26.5 MiB (1.4%) fs: overlay source: ERR-102
You tried to install to a 1.89GiB Partition!

What did you choose when Installing "Erase Disk and Install Linux" or "Something Else" ?

If you want to see visually what you've done wrong then Open gparted and let it run till you see something like this. Take a pic with "Screenshot" and post it here if possible, we would like to see it also. Host it from https://postimages.org/

Hi, pcpunk.

You're right I choose "something else", deleted partitioning, created new partition formated ext4.
I reinstalled it now choosing "Erase Disk and Install Linux".

It's not an issue, yet not understand why total storage decreased so much. System work normal, I'll keep it powered on.

Can you advise me how to update drivers properly to not break anything?

I installed gparted with sudo apt update then sudo apt install gparted.

Good to hear it is all working!

Make sure to Update the System and Turn On your Firewall.

What Drivers are you talking about? It looks to me like they are all working fine so don't go and try to install things you don't understand. Before doing stuff ask questions, or else you will cause more problems.

I do believe gparted is already installed by Default on all Linux Mint distro's, so there was no need to install it again. If you are unsure always go to the Software Manager and do a search, you will see there if the program is installed. I know, Linux guys like to tell you to use the Terminal for everything, but sometimes you should just use the built in UI, and for beginners this may be the best thing ever.

Good to see you succeed!

It comes pre-installed on the Live version of Mint, but not in the installed version.

Hi, Pjotr.

Already ordered new SSD on Aliexpress. I am just getting used to Linux, trying versions, distributives, software. I mean this HDD gonna be thrown out anyway.

Can you give any advice on what to do when system freezes? I mean, I know that I need to seek for solution on the internet forums etc. But how should I understand what to seek, I guess there are standart helpful comands, or directories where I can find freeze/error report.
In Windows I could always see error number or track the sequence of my actions to understand where issue appeared. It seems much harder for me in Linux Mint to do that.

Drivers for touchpad and videodrivers (I feel like they not quite suitable for my specific notebook). In "Drivers Manager" I see that "Proprietary drivers are not used". Is there a UI (or app) where I can check their availability as well as availability of proprietary ones?

The system is installed and working, so I guess problem is solved. Other questions are for another threads.
Thank you everyone for your input! As pcpunk mentioned the reason was incorrect system installation.

Using "Something Else" does take a little experience, or a good video. Even I need help from time to time because I don't know a lot about the inner workings of Linux.
