USB stick read only

Hi Friends, I am trying to sort a further glitch, and very much appreciated your help here in sorting my sound issues, which remain fixed. This usb memory stick issue is one I have always had with Mint 18.3 Sylvia, and no, I don't want to install a later version as they don't seem to like my machine. Generally I have lived with it, but occasionally it is a royal pain. It is a problem when I want to transfer files to my tablet or laptop particularly.
Yesterday I installed Zorin on my laptop, which I like a lot and I will use as a reader for the books and mags I download, and also to watch youtube vids I have downloaded with the excellent youtubedl. I successfully transferred one batch of files. When I reinserted the stick into this machine, my main pc, I found that the files had been marked read only. I repeated with another memory stick with exactly the same result. Googling this appears to be an FFG, frequently found glitch over a period of years. One work around suggested installing nautilus or Thunar, and I find the issue is exactly the same with those. Please, help me to eliminate this issue so that I never, ever, ever, have it again! Thanks, Tony.

Hi,
Can you put the thumbdrive in, then go to Disks and look at the settings.
Let us know what is in the 'Edit Mount Options' for each thumb drive.

Click the other part of the disk - BACKUP 30GB
then click the cogs underneath.

OK, three usb drives.
First one, backup 30Gb all items under cogs popup greyed out - no screenshot possible as the window closed on opening screenshot.
Two others, screenshots attached.

Camera image of 'Backup 30Gb'. Interesting that I have never had any problem with files on an SD card, reading or writing or reusing many times. Menu from clicking cogs greyed out.

If we concentrate on one drive at a time then we can go from there.....

Shove the 32GB drive in again.
Go to Disks.
Click on the larger partition.
Click on the cog.
Click on 'Edit Mount Options'
The top slider.... User Session Defaults - turn off.

Once you've done that, what is highlighted?

Any reason why your first USB drive has two partitions? The first partition is free space and not being used.

In Gparted, try deleting all partitions on one of the USB flash drives, then recreate a partition table (msdos) and format the newly-created partition to FAT32.

In response to Jerry, I cannot see how to delete the small partition on the 30Gb drive. GParted shows 'delete' greyed out.

OK,
In the line where it says nosuid, add the following line and it should nuke the permissions problem if that is what the problem is.
Make sure there are commas between each, so there is a comma before the rw below.

Code: Select all

,rw,noauto,fmask=000,dmask=000

Are you able to resize the second partition?

Click on the second partition, then click Resize/Move, then drag the left part of the partition box all the way to the left.

Hi Gittiest,
I find now that with the 32Gb drive, the whole mount options window is greyed out, so unable to make the change. It's as if it's anticipated me!

Is the 'Automatic Mount Option' OFF?
If you want to make any changes it needs to be OFF.

That seems to have fixed the 32Gb, many thanks for this.
