[SOLVED] Menu preferences does nothing

Post by omniviator »

Hi everybody! I'm trying to slowly replace Windows with Mint but sometimes it's hard...I cannot access any of my menu preferences. When I click on one of them nothing happens. Similar to right clicking on desktop and trying to change the background. Could it have something to do with last month's technician cloning of my system on a new hard drive? I've never had this before...(I'm on dual boot Win10 + Mint Cinnamon 19.3) Any suggestions? Warmest greetings, Dimitri

Please post the result of this command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fdxz
  • In the above code box, click on SELECT ALL that's after the word CODE:
  • Press and hold the Ctrl key, then press the letter c
  • Open the program called Terminal
  • In Terminal's menu, click on Edit, then Paste
  • Press Enter
  • Again, in Terminal's menu, click on Edit, Select All
  • Then click on Edit, Copy
  • In your forum reply window, click on code tag button.
That button is found above where you type your postings/replies. It looks like this:

    < / >

and will insert the code tags that look like this:

    [ code ] [ /code ]
  • Press and hold the Ctrl key, then press the letter v

You did and thanks! It makes it so much easier to read the output.

According to your original post, you said that you have Mint MATE 19, but your inxi output says Mint Cinnamon 19.3.

Are you trying to follow instructions for MATE instead of Cinnamon?

Great! :-) I'm not sure... I had Mate before the cloning and I just upgraded to Mint 19.3 hoping to resolve the inactive menu options problem.

If you originally had MATE and the technician cloned that, then you upgraded through Update Manager, then you'd still have MATE.

Because your inxi results show that you have Cinnamon, try following any instructions for Cinnamon on what you want to do.

Hi Dimitri,

No need for a new topic. What I meant was this:

Sometimes there are different ways to accomplish a task in each of the different Mint DE's (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce).

For you to change menu preferences, follow instructions to do that in Cinnamon instead of MATE.

I have Xfce, so I'm not familiar with Cinnamon.

Can you clarify which menu preferences you mean?

E.g are you talking about Right click on the Menu > Configure

or are you talking about opening the Menu > Preferences > Backgrounds / Applets or whatever?

If the former please run this command in a terminal and report any error output

Code: Select all

xlet-settings applet menu@cinnamon.org
Of the latter run this command in a terminal and report any error output

Code: Select all

cinnamon-settings applets

Try this command in a terminal to install/reinstall some possibly missing components.

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall gir1.2-nemo-3.0 python-nemo mint-meta-cinnamon
