Removing a bad icon from start menu [SOLVED]

Post by HarryMonster »

Greetings, all! :D

I am so happy to be joining this wonderful LM community. It's like becoming part of a new family. I have read many forum posts and I can already see that you are kind to newbies like me! I've been programming, fixing, and building computers since the 1960s but Linux is new to me. I'm one of the Win7 refugees who refuses to go the way of WinX.

Anyway, I have a Garmin GPS. Wanted to get a program called Garmin Express, which I used in Win7 to update my device. There isn't a Linux version, so I tried using WINE to make it work. It didn't. Found Chris Titus's how-to advice on his website (and YouTube), tried to fumble through making a Wine bottle using the terminal commands (not afraid of the terminal at all) and... it didn't work, again. So I decided to uninstall it.

Now, the icon won't go away. The program isn't there, the Wine bottle directory was deleted, all gone. But on my start menu the Garmin Express icon shows up and when I click "Uninstall" on it, it just stays there. How do I make it go away? Couldn't find anything about this in the forums.

I'm not sure how to attach a thumbnail using that rimg thing up there, but I'm willing to share a screen shot if you need one and can tell me how to post one.

Thanks so much in advance. It's good to be here!

G'Day, Pierre!

No, there's no delete option. When I R/click the icon, four things show: Add to panel, Add to Desktop, Add to favorites, and Uninstall. That's it.

Oh, I was supposed to mention I have Linux Mint 19.3 64-bit Cinnamon. If that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Hi HarryMonster,

Hey--we feel the same way---welcome to the Mint forums.
It's always good to provide at least the basics of what you are using, especially your Mint desktop choice (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce)
To get personally focused help just open a terminal window (from your Menu) and type in (or copy/paste) the following inquiry:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
That provides a concise overview of your hardware and software but will not reveal any personal info.
Then copy/paste those results when seeking help. The experts can advise you specifically with this info,
and it's best to provide this every time you need help.

Just tried that, Sleeper12. No joy. The icon doesn't go into the Trash, but snaps back when I release it. Good suggestion though -- I hadn't tried that before!

OK Cinnamon.
Right click the Menu icon at the left of the panel and choose 'Configure'
Then click the Menu tab, and click on 'Open the Menu editor' button.
There you can remove unwanted icons.

This is pretty neat and it worked, sort of....

I got to the Menu Editor and navigated to the offending icon. When I highlighted the icon and clicked the Delete button, nothing happened. Still there and won't go away.

However, I was able to uncheck the Show button in front of the item. When I did this, the icon no longer appears on the Menu! So I guess Linux still thinks it's there but isn't showing it to me. It's not the solution I was hoping for because I don't want to think of that fragment hanging around in my system, but at least it doesn't mock me now by showing up when I open the Menu. :|

Have you rebooted or at least logged out and back in? Forgot to say.

All41, Sleeper12... I just rebooted the machine. It still appears in the Menu Editor, but the "Show" box remained unchecked so it's still invisible on the Menu itself. The icon is in a folder... Wine/Programs/Garmin/Garmin Express . So I've unchecked the Garmin Express icon but can't remove it or the folder it's in.

Really appreciate you guys sticking with me on this one. I know it's a silly little issue, but I hate having my new install contaminated already by something dumb I did.

No... I thought I might need it for something later. But it's worth a try. Going to uninstall it now. Will let you know the results.

Progress!!!

I started by using the Uninstall WINE choice on the WINE menu. It popped up a box that wanted me to uninstall the Garmin Express program and .Net framework. Neither of those things worked.

I then went to the Software Manager, had it search for Wine, and it showed I had three programs: Winetricks, Wine-stable, and Wine. I clicked each one then clicked Remove on each. After doing this, my Menu now showed only one entry... in lower case it said " wine-wine " which looked really funny! At this point I decided it was time to reboot again, so I did and now there is no Wine, Garmin Express, or anything Wine-related showing up on the Menu. :D Just to be certain, I went into the Menu Editor again. There is one lower case entry called wine-wine and it has no icon in front of it. If I highlight it, I can't Delete it -- those options are grayed out.

Anyway, gents, I'll take that as a win! My sincere gratitude to everyone. I really hope one day to be a useful member of this community. If I can put a smile on someone's face the way you have for me tonight, I'll be even happier!

I'll go ahead and mark this one as Solved. Bless you all.

Ok, good. I'll leave it up to you if you want to try the command I posted or not. Maybe it might remove the other wine item, but I'm not certain.
