[SOLVED] System wont reboot or shutdown after kernel update

Post by vinnievegas »

I'm running 19.3 Cinnamon.
Today I updated the kernel from 5.3.0-51-generic to 5.3.0-53-generic and now when choosing reboot or shutdown my system just goes black as if I unplugged the monitor. I have to hold down my power button to get the system to shutdown and then I press power again to power my system back up. If I choose the previous kernel version in the grub menu during boot-up then reboot and shutdown work properly. There's something to do with this new kernel that must be causing the reboot and shutdown issue. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a fix?

Hello, vinnievegas.

The workaround / solution for the moment is going back to the previous kernel 5.3.0-51.

Best regards,
Karl

How can I make it boot with that kernel by default without having to select it every time?

Go into Update Manager > View > Linux kernels and remove the 5.3.0-53 kernel. Then don't apply the upgrade when it reappears.

Thank you. That worked.
Also recently I took an old hard drive out of an old system so I could salvage old data to this system. It was a hard drive from a Mint 17.1
It is causing an extra choice in grub to boot into that OS. How can I remove it? Or should I start another thread?

I'm having the same issue, though with mine it reboots if I leave it for a few minutes. It may not mean anything but I'm also using a 3200G with the onboard graphics. It's working fine when I revert to the previous kernel like yourself.

What I would do in this case is disconnect the drive for a one boot, and run sudo update-grub then reconnect the drive afterwards. Kernel upgrades automatically run update-grub, which caused it to find the "new" drive. Well, in all honesty, I'd just leave irt,as it's not the default choice anyway, but that should remove it until the next kernel upgrade.

I had the same problem reported here, after installing a few updates. However, I saw today a new kernel update, verrsion 5.3.0-59. After installing it and rebooting my PC twice, the computer shut down just fine.

Try installing this kernel update and see if it solves your problems, guys.

Yes, my problem with shutdown also has been solved for this kernel (5.3.0-59). I have made upgrade from 5.3.0-51 to 5.3.0-59 (5.3.0-53 did not work properly).

I am seeing a similar problem with the new 5.4.0-37 kernel. Everything seems fine for a couple of hours and then I lose my sound system (High Definition (HD) Audio, Realtek ALC294). After that my system will not shutdown or restart without having to perform the power off/on sequence.
I booted to the previous kernel, 5.3.0-59 and removed the 5.4 kernel and I am back running OK again. Has anyone else encountered an issue with the 5.4 level kernel?
