Linux mint 19.3 freezes at shut down

Post by kostas »

Hello everybody
I just returned to Mint after a short break with Ubuntu, and a few days after installing the Cinnamon edition my laptop freezes when shutting down, just after the logo screen disappears. Note that same thing happened with Ubuntu, after installing some updates. I checked other related posts but nothing works so far.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=320149
Boot to the advanced grub boot option and boot to 5.3.0-51 generic. If it boots, uninstall 5.3.0-53. Then refresh update manager again and get the slightly modified 5.3-0-53. This is brief. If you need better instructions, dig thru that thread, to see more complete, or post back for more help.

Not going to have any effect very likely (sorry):
The actual kernel inside Linux kernel packages 5.3.0-53.110 is absolutely the same as in 5.3.0-53.109. Only a dependency entry in the meta packages has been corrected.

I moved to 5.3.0-51 and the problem was solved. I also uninstalled the "53" one.
I' ll refer to the thread you mentioned to see what to do next.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, kostas.

The linked post merely explains as well that the kernel update from 5.3.0-53-109 to 5.3.0-53.110 brings a correction in the meta packages, but no change to the kernel 5.3.0-53.
Therefore my advice is to stick with kernel 5.3.0-51, till Ubuntu has released a new 5.3.0 kernel, where the changelog explicitly mentions that the problem affecting AMD graphics chips (on startup / on shutdown) has been resolved.

Best regards,
Karl
