Installing Software

A real newbie question I am using virt-manager 1.5.1 which I installed on mint 19 via the software manager I later found there is a more up to date version 2.2.1 which I downloaded from virt-manager's website it downloaded virt-manager-2.2.1.tar.gz folder Ive extracted the content but cant seem to find what install's the software would appreciate suggestions please.

Right click on the tar.gz and see if you can install it with Gdebi package installer. You'll likely want to remove the 1.5.1 first.

A .tar.gz file is like a zip file: it could contain anything, so there's no standard installation procedure as there would be with a .deb file.

Anyway, extract the files and look at the one called... INSTALL.md! It says:

# Basic Install

For starters, if you just want to run `virt-manager/virt-install` to test out
changes, it can be done from the source directory:
```sh
./virt-manager
```

To install the software into `/usr/local` (usually), you can do:
```sh
./setup.py install
```

To build an RPM, you can run:
```sh
./setup.py rpm
```
...[more stuff] 
..but there's some weird formatting or something; what they mean is

sh ./virt-manager
or 
sh ./setup.py install

Thanks guy's for the replies I right clicked and choose open with Gdebi package installer and received 'unable to install not Debian package ! Found the install.md file and it opened a page with same info as Flemur provided !
