I cant open the software manager and also I cant install .deb packages

Post by jethrosama »

I cant open the software manager and also I cant install .deb packages, it says software index is broken.
when I run apt update, it tells me this.:
E: Malformed entry 1 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list (Component)
E: Malformed entry 1 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list (Suite)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Please help me, I cant find an answer.

I don't have either of those .list files on my computer.

Maybe you can try to rename them and try again.

Here try this:

Open up the file explorer I use Caja, but you may use something else.

Click "File System" on the left.

Click on the folder named etc
Click the folder named apt
Right Click the folder named sources.list.d and select Open as Administrator
Enter password
and see if you have 2 files in there named
additional-repositories.list
getdeb.list

If you do right click them and select rename.
Rename the file by simply adding a .bak at the very end.
IE: additional-repositories.list.bak
getdeb.list.bak

Then minimize the file explorer and open a terminal
type: sudo apt-get update
enter password
then try to install software again,

post your results here

Alternately you can show us the exact contents of both of those files and you can get some precise advice. In this case you could just browse to those files and open them, you don't need to open as administrator to show us the content.

It might be that you've added multiple extra repositories and only one of them is creating an issue in the file, in that case you can just edit the one line, or remove the bad line. There might not be the need to remove ALL the possible lines.

You have errors - typos - on the first line of those two files. Open the files as root/sudo with a text editor, and fix or delete those lines.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
