The newer cards are supported in the STI proprietary package. You can always see the listing of supported cards at ATI, since it is their driver/Catalyst software. Older cards (not really that old) will break X if the latest proprietary driver is activated. You can also obtain the Linux driver package from ATI and drop it in yourself.
Whether you get "full use" of your card in Linux will depend on the quality of the ATI Linux driver.

For older cards, the open-source "radeon" driver works fine.
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and underneath Section "Device" add Driver "radeon"
