[SOLVED] Internal microphone not working

Post by wayfarer51 »

I didn't realize I had a problem until I tried to use Skype and was informed I had no microphone. Unfortunately, I was so happy with Mint that I had already deleted my Windows partition and now I only have Mint 20 Mate.

I checked PulseAudio volume control and the Sound application and they seemed OK to me. Nothing that leapt out at me. I didn't know how to test the microphone, but I installed gnome-sound-recorder and got nothing but system sounds recorded...no voice.

I'm including the following because they seem pretty standard in the kazillion other "Microphone not working" posts on these forums. All the ones I looked at were either beyond my comprehension, not applicable or they were some knowledgeable person addressing specific results from the OP's terminal output.

I hope someone will be kind enough to help this Mint noob. I'm really frustrated. Please let me know, kind person, if I can provide any additional information.

Hi wayfarer51,

Hopefully this is just a settings issue. Let's see the output of pacmd list-sources please.

Okay, that wasn't enough, but does help explain what's wrong. The only source is the monitor of your sound card, which is for recording what you're hearing on the computer. Let's see pacmd list-cards now and I'll bet the active-profile will be output only.

And I already know I'm correct on the assumption from your other thread. Run this then the mic should work:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

MrEen,

You wuz right. I tested the microphone using arecord and also Skype now recognizes my internal microphone.

You've done it again! Thank you so much.

You're quite welcome.

I love it when the issues are this easy! :D

And that's not a remark on you at all. I've been helping with sound issues almost exclusively for a little over 2 years, so I often know what to look for with not too much info.
