[SOLVED] No Input sources Mint 19.3 on DELL Vostro /Inspiron 7590

Post by Jann »

Hi, this is my first post after a week of Linux Mint 19.3 on my DELL Vostro 7500 Laptop. So far, it's a mixed experience. (I couldn't get Linux Mint 20 to work as I got the Initramfs error and wont even start up to the LIVE USB).

To be short, I am having trouble with my speakers and microphone, they are not recognised. It's a realtek Soundcard I believe but no Luck with having the digital sound output.

For the Input, I get the "No input sources are currently available.

All this happened after I updated the system right after a fresh install of Mint.

As a full-on newbie to Linux (I just want to be as far away from Spydows 10 as possible) I do need help, I cant figure this out on my own. So I am asking some experienced people to help me.

I have looked up what's needed for you to be able to help in this forum and have run the following:

Hi Jann, and welcome to the forum.

Run this command and paste the output please:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line will have a URL pointing to your sound setup, that should prevent me needing to ask for other commands as well. This might get a bit tricky , but I think the worst case scenario will be working speakers, but potentially non working internal microphone.

Hi,

Thank you a lot. Here is the output I got after pasting the line you posted into the Terminal:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current

100 2039 100 2039 0 0 1526 0 0:00:01 0:00:01 --:--:-- 1527
https://termbin.com/5dvy
So what does this tell me/you? (just want to learn Linux :) )

I really appreciate your help.

An additional info: I seem to have the RealTek ALC3254. In addition it thint theres an Intel soundcard as well, don't know why this laptop needs two soundcards. Maybe that information helps as well.

The problem is that I tries the Linux Mint 20 LIVE USB and things seemed fine, but after trying to install it all froye and since then i get the initramfs and am not able to even boot up. using nomodeset is alright but no sound as well. Strange because on the first attempt it all worked.

hopefully this initramfs problem will be solved soon.

Okay, the output looks mostly normal. The first thing I need you to do is undo what you did to add this:

Code: Select all

snd_hda_intel: dmic_detect=0
You probably either made a change to the kernel command line parameters in grub, or you ran something like this:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0'
If the latter, run this to undo it:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf
If you did it some other way, this should show us which file contains the change:

Code: Select all

grep snd-hda-intel /etc/modprobe.d/*
Once we get that undone, then I'll need to see the output of this command:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'
Also, there is a bug in the newest kernel, as well as the newest pulseaudio, either of which might have affected you. If you know how to boot to a previous kernel, that would be the best option at the moment, while we try to get this resolved.

And as to your question about intel/realtek. You have the realtek chip, which on Linux uses the snd-hda-intel driver, so there's nothing to worry about there.

Hi and thank you for being with me here.

I have edited the following: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as root and added options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0 at the end of this file.

I now have deleted the

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
again and saved the file.

Now (without a reboot) I have run your command and here is the output:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'

Right, here we go after a new bootup. Sorry, today has been very busy and I think we are in complete different time zones :P

I found that after removing the

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
the sound output now is not working anymore and I have the Dummy output showing up again.

Code: Select all

Yeah, that Dummy Output thing is the new normal for Ubuntu based system with the new audio driver. Next run this then reboot and test again:

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cnl.ri /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri
Actually, before you run that I guess you should confirm sof-cfl.ri doesn't exist in the output of ls -l /lib/firmware/intel/sof

Code: Select all

ls -l /lib/firmware/intel/sof
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jul 6 12:03 cml
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jul 6 12:03 cnl

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   33 Apr 16 07:41 sof-cml.ri -> cml/intel/sof-cml-v1.3-0f73628.ri
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   34 Apr 16 07:41 sof-cnl.ldc -> cnl/intel/sof-cnl-v1.3-0f73628.ldc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   33 Apr 16 07:41 sof-cnl.ri -> cnl/intel/sof-cnl-v1.3-0f73628.ri
So I guess it's there so I will run your command now and reboot.

Question in between:

Does this all also go for Linux Mint 20? I would love to install it, but I'm scared because I ran into this initramfs thing and don't know what it is, and I also don't know what this nomodeset means and does.

Right, here I am after a reboot after having run the command

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cnl.ri /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri
nothing else showed up within the termina, then reboot, the Dummy thing is still there, Input still says "No inputs sources are currently available" :?

The fix, once we stumble upon it, will be the same. There's a new audio driver that automatically loads for systems that have a digital mic array for the the internal microphone, which yours has. There has been some growing pains with this new driver that you are experiencing now.

The other things are beyond my knowledge for the most part, but I'm thinking they're mostly related to using very new hardware. It takes time for the kernel developers to catch up to Windows in this regard. Mint 20 is also very new, so you may have experienced some issues not yet caught with that. I'm thinking a little patience is all that's required for most of this stuff. But remember, this is a bit of a guess on my part.

For the new results after your most recent boot, now run this again:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'
I'm thinking now we're going to see an error for the topology firmware.

Yup. That darn topology error. Now try this then reboot and test:

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic.tplg /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg

Holy Moly, it bladdy worked!!

I have sound back, Input says I have Digital microphone and even shows me a status bar with the microphone's Input Level which is responsive to my voice or clapping my hands!!

I am so impressed and thankful for your help. I wish I had your knowledge with Linux. Having been a Windows user for too long made me dumb.

Thank you so much :D

You're very welcome! :D

Everything I've learned (sound wise, at least) is just from trying to help others. This new driver was a nightmare to deal with at first, but I'm starting to get the hang of it now. But it took a lot of reading of bug reports and exchanges between developers to start understanding it all. Your issue stemmed completely from Ubuntu not implementing the new driver properly for your hardware. They'll get there eventually.

I should also mention that an update might overwrite those symlinks you've created. I'm not sure if it would be a kernel update or a firmware update that would do that. If you lose sound again in the future, check that dmesg command and look for these again:

Code: Select all

[ 9.164814] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: Direct firmware load for intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri failed with error -2
[ 9.164818] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: request firmware intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri failed err: -2
[ 9.164823] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: failed to load DSP firmware -2
[ 9.165374] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: sof_probe_work failed err: -2
And for the topology error only shows up after fixing the above situation:

Code: Select all

[ 8.731137] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: Direct firmware load for intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg failed with error -2
[ 8.731140] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: tplg request firmware intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg failed err: -2
[ 8.731143] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: failed to load DSP topology -2
[ 8.731144] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: ASoC: failed to probe component -2
It's possible only one will get overwritten, that's why you need to check which error you're getting.

Hi, me again.

I have now freshly installed Linux Mint 20 and for some reason, the sound works from the very beginning.

However, it doesn't work after every reboot / booting up the laptop. It does not show the Dummy Output though. In addition, the System has frozen a couple of times and I had to force a shutdown with pressing the on button for 10 seconds.

I have now had luck, I rebooted the Laptop and the sound is working. I ran your command again and here's the output:

Code: Select all

Is there anything odd you can see?

I can also post the output in case I reboot again and the sound is not working.

Thank you a lot

I somehow missed your post, sorry.

I strongly suspect the newest version of pulseaudio is causing your new issue. Run this then reboot and test for a while:

Code: Select all

apt update && apt install libpulse-mainloop-glib0=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 libpulse0=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 libpulsedsp=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio-module-bluetooth=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio-utils=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2

Hi, No problem at all. I was super busy as well. Thank you for staying with me :)

I have run the command now and will test it for a while.

The Problem that I have encountered recently was a complete freeze whilst watching videos (mp4). Trying to get the laptop to reboot with pressing the start button the freezes seem to occur over and over again. I then have to wait about 5 Minutes and then boot up the Laptop and it's working again. Put Video on, after about 20 Minutes I have a complete freeze again. Maybe it is related to the sound problems?

So I will test it for a while now, watching some videos and pay close attention to how it's behaving.

Thank you again. Despite the problems, I am loving Linux Mint 20 so far. I haven't used Windows for a week now and don't miss it at all.
